General

  • Mission:
  • The mission of Childhood Leukemia Foundation is to educate, empower and lift the spirits of children stricken with all types of cancer.

  • Overview:
  • Childhood Leukemia Foundation has four core program services to educate, empower and lift the spirits of children suffering with all types of cancer. The programs include HOPE BINDERS, HUGS U WEAR, WISH BASKETS, AND KEEPING KIDS CONNECTED I PAD program. The program are offered free of charge to children, newborn to age twenty-one (21), throughout the United States. Specifically, CLF's Hugs u Wear program was developed to empower and help ease the transition back to "normal" life for a young girl. One of the biggest obstacles to overcome with a cancer diagnosis is the loss of hair. Having to look different and worry about "fitting in" should not be a part of the cancer battle. CLF's Hugs U Wear program provides custom made, 100% human hair wigs sewn into a lightweight breathable cap and a detachable hat. The Hugs U Wear program was designed to restore the child's self-esteem when returning to school, attending a prom, wedding, or many other activities in their lives.

  • History:
  • In 1992, Barbara Haramis's sister was in medical school. During a pediatric oncology rotation she told the story of a 5 year old boy who was her leukemia patient. For several days he sat alone in his hospital bed. His only wish was to possess a Nintendo Gameboy to fill the lonely, boring hours. It was at that moment that Barbara realized that although she could not cure his cancer, she certainly could support him throughout treatment by purchasing a Nintendo Gameboy for him. Since its inception in 1992, Childhood Leukemia Foundation (CLF) has established a network of over 225 hospital throughout the United States, and supported and empowered over 200,000 young cancer patients through its various program services.
