General

  • Mission:
  • The mission of The Berks County Center for Independent Living is to help people determine their own individual lifestyle, based on personal choice, from a wide spectrum of acceptable alternatives. AIM supports the philosophy of Independent Living, its successes proven daily, for people with disabilities as they choose to assume the responsibilities of directing their own lives by becoming active, contributing participants in the mainstream of their communities.

  • Overview:
  • Providing twenty years of quality and supportive services for our individuals with disabilities and our seniors has taught us something. There is only one way to provide services to you... and that is YOUR WAY! See what makes a consumer driven organization different. Check out how we “Help You Help Yourself to Independence”. Whether you are looking for a job, a home modification, an advocate, in-home and community support or any one or more of AIM’s other offerings, you have made a great first step by visiting us here.

  • History:
  • In 1989 we began operations as a non profit 501(c)3) organization known as the Berks County Center for Independent Living. In 1997 we changed our name to Abilities in Motion (AIM) to demonstrate the expansion of our outreach efforts, additional services and programs.

Since that time AIM has grown each year in the number of programs offered and the number of people with disabilities served.

AIM is a leader in the community on the issues of consumer choice and control, and is one of 18 Centers for Independent Living (CIL) located throughout the state.

AIM’s staff serves over 2600 people with disabilities throughout Berks County and the surrounding areas. As a Center for Independent Living, AIM provides: Information and Referral, Peer Counseling, Independent Living Skills Training, Service Coordination, and System Advocacy Change. All brochures and programs materials are "readily available" in both English & Spanish, and interpretive services are available upon request

The fact that programs and the needs of consumers are invariably changing, is a challenge that everyone at AIM embraces with their commitment skills and knowledge. Some of the programs that have developed over the years rise to meet those challenges: Consumer-Directed Attendant Care, Service Coordination, Agency with Choice, Housing, Financial Management Services, Nursing Home Transition and Children & Youth Services
