  • Mission:
  • The Atlanta Technical College Foundation's mission is to provide support to Atlanta Technical College and the programs and activities carried out by the College. Its purpose if to acquire, retain, invest and administer funds exclusively for the benefit of Atlanta Technical College.

  • Overview:
  • The Atlanta Technical College Foundation removes barriers for the students of Atlanta Technical College to achieve their dream of higher education. This is accomplished by providing grants to students for tuition, books and supplies, transportation, and/or emergency life expenses (i.e., utility, house or car payment).

The Atlanta Technical College Foundation also administers all academic and donor scholarships including scholarships to students in the adult literacy program at Atlanta Technical College and raises money for the general and capital needs of Atlanta Technical College.

  • History:
  • A part of the Atlanta Community since 1945, Atlanta Technical College was established as Smith-Hughes Vocational School at 232 Pryor Street, and first enrolled adults in vocational education following World War II. The school was moved in1964 to Smith High School at 535 Hill Street and renamed Hoke Smith Technical Institute. At that time, about 24 occupational programs were offered.

In 1967, the school was reorganized as Atlanta Area Technical School and was moved to its current southwest Atlanta campus, enrolling its first students in the new facilities in January 1968. In 1997, the school's name was changed to Atlanta Technical Institute and the institution became part of the Georgia Department of Technical and Adult Education. Dr. Brenda Watts Jones was tapped to become president, making her the first African-American woman in Georgia to lead a technical institution.

On July 1, 2000, the name was changed to Atlanta Technical College and Atlanta Technical College became part of the Technical College System of Georgia. At the same time, the Atlanta Technical College Foundation Board of Trustees was established to raise funds for the students of Atlanta Technical College and the general needs of the College. The founding members were Joseph Johnson and Carolyn Young.
