  • Mission:
  • Andson Foundation is committed to remedying disparity among youth with regard to personal finance and education. Andson Foundation strives to support these vital aspects of development in the lives of at-risk, disadvantaged youth through financial literacy education and academic improvement.

  • Overview:
  • Andson Foundation is committed to remedying the disparity among our youth with regards to both personal finance and education.

It believes that youths’ ability to contribute to society, care for the world around them, and eventually achieve a reasonable and sustainable standard of living depends strongly on both the level of education they receive and their ability to manage personal finances.

Andson’s goal is to support these vital aspects of development, equipping students with the necessary life skills to mitigate and avoid the education gap and financial crises that often plague the adult lives of at-risk, disadvantaged youth.

Andson intends to achieve these outcomes by focusing on two objectives:

    • Academic improvement, achieved by comprehensive afterschool tutoring support and measured in grade level literacy skills currently in use through the school system.
    • Financial literacy improvement, achieved through effective financial education, when possible encouraging savings habits through actual practice.

Andson’s two core programs, Andson Academics and the Financial Literacy Program, reach out to low-income and ethnic minority youths and are supplemented by several other collaborative and innovative projects.

Through partnerships with the Clark County School District, the Boys and Girls Clubs in Southern Nevada, Communities in Schools, and other vital organizations and foundations, Andson is meeting the financial literacy and education crisis head on, one child and one classroom at a time. Intervention through financial programs and academic assistance is crucial to end the cycle of poverty and give these students a fighting chance for success.

Andson is looking to organizations like the Lawrence Foundation to help expand its provision of these much needed programs to more Southern Nevada youth.

  • History:
  • Andson Foundation was founded by Sonia Anderson, whose experiences underscore the foundation’s philosophy. Despite being born into abject poverty in Guyana, she achieved great success in the financial world, thanks to teachers who believed in her and pushed her to achieve, relatives and friends who brought her to the United States, generous scholarships that supported her education, and her own dedicated hard work.

Her experience as a financial advisor revealed a troubling gap in literacy — financial and academic — among the general American population. The catastrophic consequences of this knowledge gap were deeply felt during the Great Recession: livelihoods were ruined and dreams dashed as family after family proved unprepared to weather the crisis.

With the belief that the best remedy and best vaccine for such disasters is a capable, self-sufficient population that is both well-educated and financially capable, the foundation committed to educating and supporting the development of youth. Therefore, Andson focuses on providing academic tutoring and financial literacy programming.

Since its inception in late 2009, the foundation has developed strong curricula for both financial literacy and academic topics relevant to students of all ages, from children to young adults; achieved concrete results in both core programs; and expanded the focus to include several innovative programs aimed at mentoring and increasing instructional time for children.

Andson operates in Southern Nevada, including Clark County, which covers the greater Las Vegas, Henderson, and North Las Vegas metropolitan areas, and a widespread rural and frontier region. Clark County suffered rampant foreclosures and joblessness in the Great Recession, and even now, the unemployment rate of Clark County remains well above 9 percent.

Worse yet, Clark County School District — the fifth-largest in the country — is chronically underfunded, and programs such as financial literacy and out-of-school educational support are often neglected and underfunded, if they exist at all. The graduation rate is a tragically low 61.69 percent, and even those who successfully graduate are not necessarily equipped for success.

Solving this dire state of affairs requires concerted effort, collaboration, innovation, and most importantly, a commitment to programs that work. The need is high, and there is much to be done. Andson seeks to lay the groundwork for a better future for the troubled youth of Southern Nevada by providing the training and support they need to face the uncertain future with independence and resilience, become successful adults, and achieve the American Dream.
