General

  • Mission:
  • Bright Beginnings’ (BB) mission is to provide homeless children with a safe, nurturing, educational environment; prepare children to enter kindergarten ready to learn; and support homeless parents so they can stabilize their home lives and become self-sufficient. Bright Beginnings is known for successfully preparing homeless children for kindergarten and for engaging their parents in their children’s education and stabilizing the families.

  • Overview:
  • BB is a nationally accredited full-day, year-round child and family development center that meets the educational, social, and physical needs of homeless children (six weeks to five years old) and provides support services to their parents as they take steps towards stability and self-sufficiency. An essential part of the District’s continuum of care for homeless families, Bright Beginnings is the only community-based organization in the area devoted specifically to homeless children. All work at BB centers around early childhood education and strengthening homeless families. BB helps homeless parents understand their role in creating a nurturing environment for their children in which delays are addressed, emotional bonding takes place, and routine is established despite external disorder. Together, BB and parents ensure that every enrolled child enters kindergarten on par with their peers.

  • History:
  • Bright Beginnings was founded in 1991 by the Junior League of Washington after conducting an extensive community needs assessment that found childcare for homeless children to be the greatest need. Since then, BB has grown from a one-room center for 26 children into a major community institution often serving more than 162 children and their families each day through center-based, home-based, and evening care. In March 2014, BB was one of only fifteen child development centers in the country to be selected for direct Head Start Funding under the latest Zero-to-Five Re-competition. For the first time in BB’s 24 years of service, the organization is a direct grantee of the US Department of Health and Human Services-Office of Head Start. Through this new funding, BB launched a pilot Home-Based Program bringing its acclaimed services to 73 additional children at homeless shelters and transitional housing programs throughout the District. Since its inception, BB has served more than 2,500 children. With a waitlist of about 200, BB is working to serve more homeless children by opening a second center in Ward 8, the most underserved ward in the District and where homelessness is most prevalent. In June 2013, BB purchased a site in Southeast DC where it will build a 16,000 square foot child and family development center for 100 additional homeless infants and toddlers and their families. The organization has raised $5.4 million toward its capital goal of $7.5 million and will break ground in 2015.
