  • The Arbor Day Foundation is a nonprofit conservation and education organization of nearly one million members founded in 1972 to celebrate the 100th anniversary of Arbor Day.

  • Major Milestones:
    *1976: Tree City USA program launched with 42 communities. The program has grown to over 3,300 cities and towns since then.

    *1977: The Arbor Day Foundation began offering a membership opportunity which has reached nearly one million members.

    *1989: The Trees for America program kicks off. Each year over 6.5 million trees are planted by members and partners to restore damaged forests and enrich our communities and countrysides.

    *1990: The Arbor Day Foundation began working with the US Forest Service to plant trees in our nation's forests. Since then with the generous support of our members and partners over 20 million trees have been planted.

    *1992: the Rain Forest Rescue program was formed to save valuable land in South and Central America. So far, more than 48,000 acres of rain forest have been preserved.

    *1993: Lied Lodge & Conference Center was opened to bring conservation practices to life, giving visitors a chance to touch, see, taste, and learn the value of nature.

    *2001: The Arbor Day Foundaiton encouraged people to vote for America's National Tree. The winner was the oak tree.

    *2005: The first Nature Explore classroom was constructed at Arbor Day Farm in Nebraska City, NE.

    *2008: "Exploring Trees Inside and Out" traveling exhibit opens at the Pacific Science Center. The traveling exhibit is an interactive exhibit that helps children explore the science of the natural enviornment while climbing, crawling, explroing, and building in serveral areas. It has toured around the United States and Canada.
