  • Mission:
  • The Algalita Marine Research Foundation was founded in 1994 by Captain Charles Moore, and is dedicated to the preservation of the marine environment through research and education. Our primary goal is to scientifically determine the levels of plastic debris found in the world?s oceans and inform the public about it through education programs, scientific publications, and the media so that measures can be taken to stop the increases in plastic pollution before the situation becomes worse than it already is.

  • History:
  • Returning to the mainland from Hawaii aboard the Oceanographic Research Vessel Alguita in 1996, Captain Moore decided to go through the North Central Pacific Gyre. This part of the ocean has very light wind and sailors usually avoid it whenever they can. But day after day he went on deck and no matter when he was there, he would see objects floating by?plastic debris. Plastics of every kind, from toothbrushes to containers to plastic bags to bottles, and he thought, if there?s this much plastic garbage out here where there?s nothing?as far from land as you can get anywhere on earth?then we should try to quantify how much is here and do something about it.? Since that time AMRF has devoted its efforts to doing exactly that. Alguita has traveled to the Pacific Gyre on four trips since that first one, collecting water samples which are analyzed for the presence and levels of plastic. We have learned that in some parts of the Pacific Ocean plastic outweighs zooplankton by a ration of six to one, and the levels of plastic are increasing daily as more and more plastic debris enters the ocean from the world?s watersheds.

The second part of our mission is to educate the public about what we?re finding. Following are some of the ways in which we have been doing that: Completed 100 school assemblies focusing on watersheds an article on Captain Charles Moore and AMRF?s work, ?Our Oceans Are Turning Into Plastic. . . Are We?? appeared in Best Life magazine, Volume III, Number 9, November 2006 completed the Voyage of the Fluke, a trip down the southern California coastline aboard the recycled raft Fluke, starting in Santa Barbara, ending in San Diego, and stopping in five ports along the way to visit elementary schools AMRF?s work was the subject of Part Four, ?The Sea Preserves a Plastic Plague,? in the Los Angeles Times outstanding five-part series, ?Altered Oceans,? which appeared in the Times in August, 2006 Captain Charles Moore was a presenter in September, 2006 at the 36th Session of the International Seminars on Planetary Emergencies held in Erice, Italy (invited to participate by Professor Antonino Zichichi, Science Advisor to the Pope) Dr. Marcus Eriksen, AMRF Education Director, recently received the 2006 H. David Nahai Water Quality Award for Education from the State of California, Los Angeles Regional Water Quality Control Board Produced Watershed Expo 2006, a community education event held on March 25, 2006 at the Hermosa Beach Community Center Produced and co-sponsored
