  • Mission:
  • We educate and advocate to protect the Catawba-Wateree River Basin's lakes, rivers and streams for everyone who depends on and enjoys them.

  • Overview:
  • The Catawba Riverkeeper Foundation, a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization, effectively meets its goals of sustaining and enhancing the Catawba-Wateree River basin by using a multi-pronged approach that includes advocacy, education and protection.

•Advocacy- CRF comments on proposed public actions, participates in new rulemaking, testifies at public hearings, organizes community meetings, meets with public officials, reports illegal activity, recognizes companies and individuals that are examples of responsible environmental behavior, and litigates against individuals and entities that take actions to harm the Catawba River.
•Education- CRF educates the public and elected officials about issues affecting the Catawba River through publication of reports, one-on-one meetings, press conferences, and on-the-water programs. CRF also leads the a youth education and kayaking program, which uses a hands-on approach to teach inner-city children aquatic biology concepts, water safety, and kayaking skills. Additionally, volunteers and staff conduct presentations to school groups and clubs such as the Boy Scouts.
•Protection- The Catawba Riverkeeper conducts water and fish tissue sampling to test for contaminants, responds to reports of water quality problems, and monitors the River. Staff efforts are multiplied by the network of trained volunteers (Covekeepers/Water Watchers) who collect water quality samples, respond to complaints about threats to the River, monitor the work of public bodies affecting the River, conduct lake cleanups, and advocate for the protection of our water.

  • History:
  • The Catawba Riverkeeper Foundation (CRF) was founded in 1997 by the Lake Wylie Marine Commission (with funding from the Lake Norman Marine Commission) in response to the Centrolina Council of Government’s 1995 study and task force evaluation of the river corridor from Lake Norman to Lake Wylie including extensive analysis on land use, demographics, water quality, plant and animal life, recreational facilities and public utilities. The task force steering committee’s recommendation was to “Establish a River-keeping System on the Catawba River.” Shortly after, CRF was licensed by the Waterkeeper Alliance, Inc. and has been monitoring and advocating for the Catawba River ever since.

Waterkeeper Alliance is a global environmental organization uniting more than 200 Waterkeeper organizations around the world. It focuses its citizen advocacy on the issues that affect our waterways, from pollution to climate change. Waterkeepers patrol more than one million square miles of rivers, streams and coastlines in the Americas, Europe, Australia, Asia and Africa.

Since January 1998, when the CRF Board of Directors hired the first Catawba Riverkeeper, CRF has grown into a network of hundreds of volunteers and four employee staff (3 full-time, 1 part-time) who are supported by approximately 700 members. For fifteen years, the focus of this successful Riverkeeper program has been on directly improving water quality through monitoring and conservation advocacy, and on increasing public awareness through education and strong partnerships.
