  • Mission:
  • The Alliance for Eating Disorders Awareness (The Alliance) is dedicated to providing programs and activities aimed at outreach and education related to health promotion, including all eating disorders, obesity, positive body image, and self-esteem.

  • Overview:
  • The Alliance is a non-profit organization that is dedicated to providing programs and activities aimed at outreach and education related to health promotion, including all eating disorders, positive body image, and self-esteem. Founded in October 2000, The Alliance has worked tirelessly to prevent eating disorders and promote a positive body image, free from weight preoccupation and size prejudice throughout Florida and nationwide. This multi-faceted organization offers educational presentations, support groups for those struggling and for their family and friends, advocacy for mental health legislation, toll-free national phone help line, as well as referrals, training, support, and mentoring services, all free of charge. The Alliance has achieved national reach and recognition through the U.S. and Florida Treatment Referral Guides, referrals, advocacy work, and speaking engagements. Since its inception, The Alliance has offered presentations on eating disorders, positive body image and self-esteem to more than 210,000 individuals throughout the United States.

Eating disorders do not discriminate between race, class, sex, age, ability, and sexual orientation. No one is immune. Therefore, at The Alliance, we actively reach out, educate, and support both the professional and lay population, individuals of all ages, males and females, those struggling as well as their loved ones, and individuals with co-occurring psychological disorders.

  • History:
  • For the past 14 years, The Alliance has been on the forefront of creating the conversation on eating disorders and body image, throughout Palm Beach County and beyond, when no one else wanted to talk about it. By eradicating the shame and stigma surrounding eating disorders, we reaffirm the message that it’s ok to talk about it and to get help. By augmenting access to care, individuals are less often struggling in silence and receive the life-saving help that they deserve. Lives are being saved and voices are being heard. While creating this conversation, we have engaged our political and community leaders. Since our inception, The Alliance has presented educational presentations to more than 210,000 children, teens, adults, professionals, family and loved ones. We hold six free weekly support groups at the office (including eating disorders, eating disorders and substance use, eating disorders and the LGBTQ population, friends and family, and adolescents and eating disorders). Since 2010, The Alliance has produced and printed 55,000 U.S. Treatment Center Guides and 33,000 Florida Eating Disorder Treatment Referral Guides. The Florida Guide is mailed to every school in Florida and the U.S. Guide is mailed to every college in the United States—all free of charge. Through partnerships with various eating disorder treatment centers, The Alliance provides six (6) continuing education trainings, free of charge, annually to mental health practitioners, educators, healthcare providers, and community groups and agencies. More than 150 community members attend each of these trainings. In an effort to advocate for eating disorder education, outreach, treatment, and research, The Alliance organizes regular trips to our state and national capitols, letter, phone call, and email campaigns, and more. Lastly, we have worked with national media outlets to create conversation and publish factual and informational stories through television and magazines.
