  • Mission:
  • To foster environmental stewardship of the Saginaw Bay watershed and the Great Lakes ecosystem and to provide personal development opportunities for learners of all ages and abilities through shipboard and land based educational experiences.

  • Overview:
  • The Saginaw Bay Watershed is Michigan’s largest, encompassing all or part of 22 counties. It covers 87,000 square miles and is home to 1.4 million people. Through its SCIENCE UNDER SAIL program, BaySail demonstrates the importance of the watershed and environmental stewardship while engaging students in a powerful hands-on experience that supports classroom learning in a way no other program can.
A student’s experience starts in the classroom with pre-program activities provided to participating teachers as part of the comprehensive BaySail Educator’s Manual. Materials are grade-specific, aligned to the Michigan Department of Education’s core curriculum standards, and correspond to each major discipline—Language Arts, Math, Science and Social Studies.
Once aboard the sailing vessel, students receive a personal Appledore journal which they complete as they work through several educational stations and activities including water testing, bottom (benthic) sampling, weather and wildlife observation and plankton studies. During the three and a half-hour long excursion in the Saginaw Bay and along the Saginaw River, students also participate in ship board duties such as raising sails, navigating, steering and knot tying.
Post-program activities reinforce lessons once students return to the classroom. The results of post-voyage student assessment are compared to the results of a pre-voyage assessment to judge the impact on student learning.
A SCIENCE UNDER SAIL experience provides students the opportunity to make important connections between what they learn in the classroom and the world in which they live. Students begin to understand how their actions can affect the environment for thousands of individuals and they begin to see how their actions—no matter how small—can make a big difference. Through it all, students receive an introduction to scientific principles and processes that will encourage them to consider further scientific education and a career in science.

  • History:
  • BaySail and its programming aboard the Appledore IV are unique to the Saginaw Bay Watershed and the region. Indeed BaySail is only one of two similar organizations that exist in the state of Michigan and the only one operating along Michigan’s eastern coast.
Since its inception, BaySail has welcomed more than 40,000 students aboard its tall ship Appledore IV. Students from 33 Michigan counties have been engaged in the experiential learning that is BaySail programming. Outreach has occurred in port communities on Lakes Michigan, Huron and Erie and the SCIENCE UNDER SAIL program received the coveted "Sea Education Program of the Year" in 2002 by Tall Ships® America (formerly the American Sail Training Association).
In everything we do—whether we are demonstrating a scientific principle to a SCIENCE UNDER SAIL student, challenging a youngster to fulfill his/her potential, or introducing someone to the Saginaw Bay and Lake Huron for the first time—BaySail opens minds and creates life-long environmental stewards.
