  • Mission:
  • To build community and change lives.

  • Overview:
  • We bring together volunteers from every part of the construction industry to design and build structures for communities in need. Together with our partners, we use donations of time, money, materials, and expertise to build clinics, schools, community centers, and specialized housing for those who need them most—both in our own community and around the world. Non-construction volunteers are a critical part of our team. And, beyond the bricks and mortar of a new structure, BGF volunteers build lasting relationships with the people they are helping—relationships that profoundly improve the lives of all involved.

    Make environmental specific.

  • History:
  • In October of 1999, a group of Virginia builders met for breakfast to discuss their most recent project. Unlike previous work, this effort required no earth-moving equipment, no paid subcontractors, and no interaction with the local building officials. This project was unlike any they had ever attempted before.

It started in 1997, when Lawson Drinkard convinced Jack Stoner, his good friend and contractor, to hop a plane to the poorest country in the Western Hemisphere--Haiti. Their mission was to assist the Comprehensive Development Project in the construction of a rural community center aimed at stemming the poverty found through the rough and deforested land. Moved by the dire living conditions and the indomitable spirit of the Haitians, Jack found the perfect place to unleash the talents he had accumulated over the years.

Upon his return, Jack enlisted his business partner, Michael Cernik, and friend, Howard Pape, to join the efforts. Others soon followed and learned first hand of the powerful experience awaiting those willing to slog through the rutted roads of rural Haiti. "Life changing," "An entirely new perspective," "The best trip of my life" were frequent comments coming from the new band of construction professionals and dedicated army of volunteers.

Many years and many breakfasts later, Building Goodness Foundation has emerged as a highly respected charity organization. From the foothills of the Blue Ridge to the flood ravaged banks of the Mississippi and the mountains of Haiti, BGF volunteers have given their time, energy and skill to construct numerous projects for those most in need, giving hope and improving lives worldwide.
