General

  • Mission:
  • The mission of Big Brothers Big Sisters of Washington County, MD, Inc. (BBBS) is to help children and youth (Littles) reach their full potential through professionally supported one-to-one relationships with mentors (Bigs). Caring Bigs support Littles in their healthy development into productive adult members of the community by assisting them in their educational, social, emotional, and character development.

  • Overview:
  • Big Brothers Big Sisters of Washington County, MD, Inc. offers Community-Based, Sports Buddies and Site-Based Mentoring. Littles, ages 6 to 13, are eligible to be matched with Bigs. Through Community-Based and Sports Buddies Mentoring, Littles receive professionally supported mentoring until graduating from high school or the age of 18. Site-Based Mentoring is currently offered in 11 elementary and middle schools in Washington County Public Schools. Littles in these select schools receive professionally supported mentoring until they advance to a school at which Site-Based Mentoring isn’t offered. Many of the mentoring relationships continue long after their formal closure.
In Community-Based Mentoring, Bigs typically meet with their Littles weekly in the evening or on the weekend for three to five hours. Activities vary depending on the Big and Little’s mutual interests. In Sports Buddies Mentoring, Bigs typically meet with their Littles one to two times a month in the evening or on the weekend to either attend a sporting event or participate in a sporting activity. Finally, in Site-Based Mentoring, Bigs typically meet with their Littles weekly during a scheduled time of the school day for 45-60 minutes. Again, activities vary depending on the Big and Little’s mutual interests. A professional, Bachelor’s Degree-level caseworker provides professional support to the Big, Little and Little’s family with the main objective being to sustain a successful match.
In providing match support, professional caseworkers contact participants to assess 1) the quality of the match, 2) any issues/concerns regarding child safety, and 3) positive outcomes of the match. The Big, Little and the Little’s parent are contacted after the first two weeks of the match to determine how the match is progressing. Subsequently, contact is made monthly during the first year of the match. After the initial year, contacts occur on a quarterly basis. This process continues through the length of the match. Finally, Bigs, Littles and Littles’ families are also invited to bi-monthly activities planned by BBBS, which provides a fun, no-cost activity at which BBBS staff have the opportunity to provide support.

  • History:
  • Big Brothers Big Sisters of Washington County, MD, Inc. has been serving children and youth (Littles) since 1956. Community-Based Mentoring has been offered since 1956. In 2002, Site-Based Mentoring was introduced. Finally, in an effort to increase recruitment, Sports Buddies Mentoring, which is an extension of Community-Based Mentoring, was added in 2012. Policy and program guidelines are established by a community-based Board of Directors.
