  • Boys & Girls Clubs of Edinburg RGV is a community based, youth development organization dedicated to promoting the health, physical, social, education, vocational, cultural, character and leadership development of area youth with a special emphasis on the youth who need us most. Its Mission Statement is a concise yet loaded one:
    To enable all young people, especially those who need us most, to reach their full potential as productive, caring, and influential citizens.

    The BGC RGV outreach community is one of great need. The target population is 98% Hispanic and have 91% economic disadvantage with a 46% English Language Learning population.

    The minority achievement gap unfortunately does not facilitate youth preparation for careers in STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Math). Therefore, BGCs Edinburg RGV will conduct a fun but comprehensive STEM curriculum of activities in partnership with NASA, South Texas College and the University of Texas – Pan American.

  • Overview:
  • The Boys & Girls Clubs (BGCs) of Edinburg RGV has been working with youth and teens for 41 years. It is an autonomous 501c3 that functions as a City of Edinburg Agent. BGCs Edinburg RGV services over 18,000 youth annually with a budget of more than $1,300,000. BGCs Edinburg RGV enjoys a reputation for fiscal integrity and effective management. It has received numerous grants and managed them with full compliance. The City of Edinburg Finance Department will monitor financial expenditures, financial transactions and distribution of grant funds. BGC also brings a level of partnership unsurpassed in the area through school partnerships with collaborative services throughout Edinburg CISD school campuses. BGCs Edinburg RGV has raised over $1,000,000 scholarships through partnerships and collaborations. The organization has had at least two recipients of the Southwest Region ConocoPhillips scholarship for the last 12 years. The club raised over $5,000,000 for its new facility and managed the capital campaign for it. The club annually manages federal funds through the U.S. Department of Justice, Office of Juvenile Justice Prevention in varying amounts. The organization also leverages other support such as club owned vehicles that may be utilized for this program; assess to healthy snacks and meals through the Food Bank and CACFP; and program space and gymnasium owned which will be utilized as an adjunct site in the summers is provided in kind. Community members will be utilized as guest speakers. The current list of speakers identifies over 10 non-profit organizations. Staff have been trained in academic and behavioral mentoring. The Chief Professional Officer of Edinburg RGV, Sabrina Walker-Hernandez is a skilled administrator, national leader within the Boys & Girls Club Movement and a state board member of the Texas Partnership for Out of School Time (TXPOST). BGCs Edinburg RGV is equipped to manage the BGC STEM Innovation Project.

    BGCs Edinburg RGV is a model Boys and Girls Club that leads other Valley clubs with innovative programming. BGCs Edinburg RGV has already led in training staff from multiple organizations in the NASA curriculum facilitation. By providing a demonstration for the implementation of the model, the Lawrence Fundation’s investment in BGC STEM Innovation would multiple exponentially in that each club could then use its own operational resources or develop the funding to implement the model. BGCs Edinburg RGV proposes to provide 500 youth with the program in 2013 – 2014. BGC’s Valley wide serve over 75,000 youth and would be able to use the success date to leverage other funders to launch this program in their clubs. BGCs Edinburg RGV plans to integrate and institutionalize the BGC STEM Innovation program into its operational budget the following year. With the success data we will gain about STEM advancement and NASA assistance we should be able to leverage a deeper partnership with our local university, University of Texas – Pan American and South Texas College with BGC’s local chapter of the professional association (TPA-RGV).

    Ninety-two (92%) of Boys & Girls Clubs of Edinburg RGV club members graduate high school. According to the U.S. Bureau of Statistics, professional information technology (IT) jobs will increase 24% between 2006 and 2016. The Boys & Girls Clubs of Edinburg RGV can make measureable strides in promoting Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics preparation, career exploration, and hands-on technology learning with the partnerships built with South Texas College and the University of Texas-Pan American.
    BGC STEM will serve 500 youth in grades 4 – 9 with NASA and other science activities that produce a science grade improvement in 80% (400 youth) of participants.

    BGC STEM Innovation will promote STEM learning opportunities for 500 youth throughout the school year and regular summer camp activities in 2013 - 2014 for youth in grades 4 – 9 that improve school grades in STEM classes to prepare for STEM career exploration. BGC STEM Innovation is a comprehensive multi-faceted program designed to stimulate interest in science, technology, engineering and mathematics while preparing the way for success in STEM fields by improving academic preparedness on grade level in mathematics and science. Components include NASA Science, iLASER and Robo Tech and intensive response to intervention for math called AIM (Academic Innovation & Mentoring).
