General

  • Mission:
  • The mission of the Columbia Gorge Ecology Institute is to create life-long learning opportunities that foster a sense of wonder and community stewardship in the natural systems of the Columbia River Gorge.

  • Overview:
  • The Columbia Gorge Ecology Institute (CGEI) is dedicated to promoting knowledge, stewardship, and curiosity of the local environment among people who live, work and play in the Columbia Gorge region. Through each of our programs we're cultivating the long-term sustainability of the Columbia River Gorge through place-based education, connecting communities and the unique nature of the region. We know of no other environmental education programs that offer such extensive support to classroom teachers in the Columbia River Gorge, and we feel this level of support is essential in order for students' grasp of environmental science to become deep, durable, and applicable in their lives.

  • History:
  • The Ecology Institute was formed on an identified need for residents of the Columbia Gorge to gain ecological literacy. Now in its 16th year, our programs have reached 500 classrooms and 15,000 students in 14 rural, under-served communities in the Columbia River Gorge. Our annual goal is to serve 25 upper elementary classrooms reaching 1,000 third grade through high school age students. According to the National Center for Education Statistics, "low-income students number up to 70% in mid-Columbia area schools and over 50% of students are on the free lunch program." Over a decade of our pre-test results have shown statistically that rural students of the Columbia Gorge are unaware of basic ecological concepts that make up the backbone of biological science. With the vast majority of the economic base of the Columbia Gorge depending on natural resources, it is essential that such science-based understandings be fostered in order to develop a sustainable approach to natural resource conservation.
