General

  • Mission:
  • The mission of Childrens Hospital Los Angeles is to make a world of difference in the lives of children, adolescents, and their families by integrating medical care, education and research to provide the highest quality care and service to our diverse community.

  • History:
  • In 1901, Childrens Hospital Los Angeles was founded by a small group of women volunteers who converted a private home into a four-bed hospital. We were the first hospital dedicated to children in Los Angeles. Today, our 286-bed medical center has become an international leader in treating some of the most complex forms of pediatric injury and disease. Our mission is “to make a world of difference in the lives of children, adolescents, and their families by integrating medical care, education and research to provide the highest quality care and service to our diverse community.” Our Centers of Excellence—the Childrens Center for Cancer and Blood Diseases, the Childrens Orthopaedic Center, the Center for Endocrinology, Diabetes, and Metabolism, the Heart Institute, the Vision Center, and the Center for Fetal and Neonatal Medicine—are recognized worldwide. Childrens Hospital Los Angeles is designated as a Level I Pediatric Trauma Center by the Los Angeles County EMS Agency and is the only free-standing children’s hospital in the county to be verified by the American College of Surgeons as a Level I Pediatric Trauma Center. Only a dozen institutions across the U.S. hold this verification. As a result, patients come here for expert trauma care from throughout Southern California. Our Pediatric Emergency Transport System is one of the largest in the United States. Childrens Hospital Los Angeles treats over 62,000 children in its emergency department every year. Moreover, we provide more days of inpatient care to children than any other hospital in California.

With expertise in nearly 100 pediatric medical and surgical subspecialty and subspecialty support service areas, Childrens Hospital Los Angeles offers the full continuum of medical services to our young patients. We are the largest provider of pediatric medical care in our eight-county area (Los Angeles, Kern, Orange, Riverside, Santa Barbara, San Bernardino, San Luis Obispo, and Ventura) and a referral center for patients throughout California, the nation, and the world. We admit more than 11,000 children a year to the hospital. Nearly 43 % of our young patients are under five years of age, and 74 % are under the age of 12.

In fiscal year 07-08, the Childrens Hospital cared for over 94,000 patients who made 285,850 visits to the hospital and to our community sites. Our patient population is approximately 65% Hispanic, 11% White, 6% African-American, 5% Asian/Pacific Islander, and 13% other or unknown. Almost half of our young patients are under the age of six. With expertise in nearly 100 pediatric medical and surgical subspecialty and subspecialty support service areas, Childrens Hospital Los Angeles offers the full continuum of medical services to our young patients.

At Childrens Hospital Los Angeles, about 71% of our patient families - more than at any other children’s hospital in the state - depend on Medi-Cal for health care services for their children. In fiscal year 2008, the discrepancy between the cost of treating these patients and Medi-Cal reimbursement was $8.9 million.
