  • Mission:
  • To develop the leadership of people of faith at the grassroots level to achieve positive change in our community. To bring people together across racial, economic and religious lines by listening to the stories of the people of northern Nevada and connecting with civic and political leaders to build relationships, identify common concerns, find solutions and take action to improve the quality of life and expand opportunity for all Nevada families, especially the most vulnerable.

  • Overview:
  • The state of Nevada has long been at the top for poor social indicators/ undesirable quality of life measurements. An economy that has historically depended on gaming, tourism and mining as its major industries, all of which did not require an educated workforce, are on a steady decline in Northern Nevada. The owners of the industries have been so concerned with keeping taxes very low (and regressive) that there has been little organized community support and effort directed toward investing in education and training. The result is that as the old model of doing business has failed in a worldwide economic downturn, and Nevada has found itself near the bottom of education, family sustaining wage employment and health services. Currently Nevada is at the very bottom in high school graduation rates nationally. And during the great recession has been at the top for unemployment.

The CNN Money publication of February 4, 2012, showed Nevada as leading the nation in unemployment (12.6% compared with 8.5% nationally); 1 in 16 homes were in foreclosure (compared with 1 in 69 nationally); and 58% of homes had more owed than the mortgage.

The 2013 Nevada Legislature's Nevada Education Data Book shows that Nevada led the nation in lowest graduation rates at 56.3% (national average , 75.5%), having dropped from 69% in 1999. At the 8th grade level Nevada students testing proficient or better were: reading, 26%; math, 29%; and science, 24%. Fifty percent of Nevada students come from families classified as low income and 19% have limited English proficiency, speaking English as a second language. This is the economic and social platform ACTIONN seeks to lift.

ACTIONN was organized to bring together everyday people of the community, who are experiencing the pain that results from low educational attainment and unemployment, to work together to create the urgently needed change.

  • History:
  • In 2009 an interfaith group of clergy from northern Nevada became aware of faith based organizing as a way to build deeper relationships within their communities to address sources of pain and suffering of their members.

After a process of discernment and meetings with the PICO (People Improving Communities Through Organizing) National Network, lay and ordained leaders from diverse faith communities invited PICO to assist them in training clergy and lay leaders in the PICO model of community organization. In February, 2011 ACTIONN incorporated and in October 2011 hired its first staff person. It obtained its IRS tax exempt status on August 12, 2012.

ACTIONN leaders undertook an 18 month "Listening Campaign" where they deepened their relationships with each other while uncovering the issues that caused individuals the greatest pain in their lives. From information gained from nearly 700 one-to-one conversations between ACTIONN leaders and congregational members, leaders chose the first two issues to work on together --improving education and creating jobs in northern Nevada, in April 2012.

For 4 months, ACTIONN leaders conducted a series of "research actions" where they met with local and national experts on the issues of education and jobs to uncover the root causes of the issues, opportunities for systemic change, and best practices. After another month of many meetings to review data and develop criteria, the first five campaigns were selected to work on together.

These campaigns were ratified at ACTIONN's Founding Convention October 9, 2012, where over 600 persons were in attendance, included elected and appointed officials with the power to make change.

Then work began to develop strategy and tactics on the first 2 campaigns on education and jobs: Parent Teacher Home Visits and Health Care Jobs of the Future.
