  • Mission:
  • To enrich our community by encouraging humane treatment of animals and helping people with their animal problems.

  • Overview:
  • Canyon County Animal Shelter (CCAS) is the only animal shelter for dogs and cats in Canyon County, Idaho, a community of 190,000 people. The shelter takes in almost 7,000 dogs and cats each year and their save rate is over 95% of all the animals taken in.

CCAS serves the community by taking in stray and unwanted dogs and cats in Canyon County. They adopt out dogs and cats and all adoptions include spay/neuter, vaccinations including rabies, and microchips for dogs and ID tags for cats. They have a Senior For Seniors Program, where anyone 60 and older can adopt a pet age 7 or older and the adoption fee is waived. They also offer “Better With A Buddy”, allowing anyone adopting a cat or kitten to adopt a second cat or kitten with the adoption fee waived.

CCAS helps operate the Pen Pals Program at Snake River Correctional Institution in Ontario, Oregon where unadoptable dogs are paired up with specially trained inmates and they learn basic obedience and are adopted out to people in the community.

CCAS also operates a Pet Food Bank, where people having trouble feeding their pets due to economic hardship can obtain free dog and/or cat food. CCAS gave out over 10 tons of pet food in 2012 to needy community members.

CCAS offers a low-cost vaccination and microchipping clinic to the public and helps very low income citizens get needed emergency care for their animals.

  • History:
  • Canyon County Animal Shelter was operated by the Canyon County Sheriff’s Department until a group of committed individuals took over as a private non-profit on October 1, 2011. In 2011, the Canyon County Commissioners decided that budget cuts were forcing them to severely cut funding of the shelter to only $300,000 (down from a 2011 budget of 1.2 million) for the next fiscal year. Barb Hutchinson, our current Executive Director, approached the Commissioners and they agreed to privatize the shelter and let Friends of the Canyon County Animal Shelter (a 501c3 created in 2008 to help with fundraising for the county shelter) take over as of October 1, 2011. At that time, they began with a new board of directors and a new staff. The shelter funding now comes from private donations, fees for service and fundraising events.

The staff immediately reduced the animal euthanasia rate from over to 50% to less than 5% of the animals entering the shelter. They also began taking in cats for the first time in two years.

In 2012, CCAS entered the ASPCA Rachel Ray $100,000 Challenge, a nation-wide shelter competition offering grants to the shelters saving the most lives over a 3 month period. CCAS garnered national attention and received the 2nd place $50,000 award in the competition. This year, in 2013, CCAS again entered the competition and won the $25,000 Community Engagement Award by doing the best job nationwide of getting the community involved in their life-saving efforts.
