  • Mission:
  • Children's Center of the Cumberlands (CCC) is a 501(c)(3) non-profit child advocacy center located in the Appalachian mountains of eastern Tennessee. Our mission is to provide a place of comfort and safety for children who have been abused, to equip children and non-offending parents with the tools necessary to heal from devastating trauma, and to prevent child abuse in Scott County, Tennessee. As a child advocacy center, Children's Center of the Cumberlands is dedicated to providing: (1) a multidisciplinary team approach to investigation of reports of physical and sexual abuse, (2) services to victims and their non-offending family members, and (3) child abuse prevention education. Services are offered in a homelike atmosphere designed to reduce trauma and stress and address legal and medical needs of abused children. We serve as a model for child abuse organizations in other isolated or mountainous communities throughout the country.

  • History:
  • The Children's Center was established in 2000 under the leadership of Wm. Paul Phillips, Attorney General of the 8th Judicial District, motivated by his concern with the level of services available to abused children in our area. Before the Children's Center, child abuse victims were forced to tell their story multiple times while being shuffled from office to office - to the Department of Childrens Services, the hospital, the sheriffs office, and the district attorney general?s office. In 2006, the center provided the following services to victims of child abuse: 101 child abuse investigations, 260 forensic interviews, 57 forensic medical interviews, 30 on-site medical examinations, 837 counseling sessions, assistance to 129 children and their families in filing victim?s compensation claims with the state, support for 132 children in court appearances, and 305 units of transportation for children and their families. We taught prevention education and body-safety classes to 4,553 children in grades K - 12.
