  • Mission:
  • Bakersfield Memorial Hospital Foundation is the fundraising organization for Bakersfield Memorial Hospital. As such it seeks to raise funds and community support to enable the not-for-profit Bakersfield Memorial Hospital to continue to provide the highest level of quality healthcare to residents of Kern County.

  • History:
  • The Bakersfield Memorial Hospital Foundation was established in 1981 to raise funds for Bakersfield Memorial Hospital (BMH). BMH was started as a result of a citizen campaign formed by civic leaders and healthcare professionals in the early 1950s to build a new community hospital. This drive led to the opening of the original 112-bed Greater Bakersfield Memorial Hospital in 1956.
As a result of sustained local support since its founding, Bakersfield Memorial Hospital has continued to grow to meet the needs of the community. Numerous construction projects completed through the years have built BMH into the regional tertiary medical center it is today. The hospital is licensed for 307 beds and currently has 267 general medical surgical beds, specialty intensive care or post-anesthesia care beds, 16 operating rooms, a heavily used Emergency Room with a Chest Pain Center, a Birthing Center with a full-service NICU, four Cardiac Catheterization labs, a full complement of diagnostic laboratory and imaging services, pediatrics unit and outpatient surgery.
In 1995 BMH decided that to keep pace with area growth and to continue to offer high-caliber services, it should affiliate with a large system that shared the hospital's nonprofit, mission-driven philosophy. After months of looking at possible partners, BMH chose Catholic Healthcare West, the largest faith-based hospital system in California. The affiliation was completed in 1996.
BMH has 530 medical staff members serving patients in general medicine, surgery, cardiac services, family practice, obstetrics/gynecology, pediatrics, orthopedics, and a variety of diagnostic specialties. To provide the highest quality of care possible, Bakersfield Memorial Hospital has established eight Centers of Excellence in:
    - Cardiovascular Services
    - Neurosciences
    - Surgical Services
    - Women’s Services
    - Pediatrics
    - Emergency Services
    - Orthopedic Services
    - Hyperbaric Medicine
Bakersfield Memorial Hospital has been steadfast in its commitment to meeting the changing and growing health care needs of Kern County. The physicians and staff of BMH are dedicated to:
    - delivering compassionate, high-quality, accessible health services with the finest physicians, staff, and technology available
    - creating a healthier community by healing the sick and injured
    - partnering with others in the community to improve the quality of life
