General

  • Mission:
  • The mission of the Antarctic Climate and Ecosystems Cooperative Research Centre is to understand the crucial role played by Antarctica and the Southern Ocean in global climate, and the impacts of climate change on Australia and the world.

  • Overview:
  • The Antarctic Climate and Ecosystems Cooperative Research Centre (ACE CRC) is a multidisciplinary partnership of 21 national and international organisations. It is established and supported under the Australian Government's Cooperative Research Centres Program. The core partners of the ACE CRC are the University of Tasmania, the Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Research Organisation, the Commonwealth of Australia (Australian Antarctic Division, and Department of Climate Change and Energy Efficiency), the Alfred Wegener Institute for Polar and Marine Research (Germany) and the National Institute of Water and Atmospheric Research Ltd (New Zealand).

ACE CRC is Australia's largest centre of Antarctic and Southern Ocean climate change research. Its mission is two fold: 1) to understand the crucial role played by Antarctica and the Southern Ocean in global climate, and the impacts of climate change on Australia and the world and 2) to inform governments, the community and scientists about climate change to guide our future.

Research at ACE CRC includes Antarctic Ice Sheet, Ice Cores and the Aurora Basin, Southern Ocean circulation, Southern Ocean carbon sink, Ocean Fertilisation, Ocean Acidification and Ecosystem Impacts. Through this research ACE CRC has revealed the role of Antarctica and the Southern Ocean in the global climate system and the course of climate change. The focus of ACE CRC is not only on producing great research, but also ensuring that out research outcomes are distributed to the wider community. This is successfully done through journal and magazine publications as well as workshops, school visits and regular website updates.

  • History:
  • Antarctic Climate and Ecosystems Cooperative Research Centre (ACE CRC) has a long history as a CRC. ACE was originally established as the “CRC for the Antarctic and Southern Ocean Environment” in 1991 in the first round of funding for Australia’s Cooperative Research Centres Program. Since then, it has been refunded in 1997 (as the CRC for Antarctica and the Southern Ocean), and in 2003 and 2010 as the ACE CRC.
