General

  • Mission:
  • At Because of Hope (BOH), our mission is to sustainably empower widows and orphans in Uganda by creating lasting solutions to the problems that arise from poverty. BOH’s approach to empowerment is centered on the idea of working in collaboration with, as opposed to working for. By equipping widows with the necessary skills to furnish their own sustainable incomes and orphans with an otherwise unattainable education, BOH provides the necessary tools for individuals and communities to ignite change in their lives and in the lives of others.

  • Overview:
  • While visiting Uganda in 2009, Natalie Lemonnier and Nikki Day met a Ugandan couple who were the founders of a Ugandan non-governmental organization called Widows and Orphans Community Action Plan (WOCAP), an organization working to empower women and educate children. WOCAP's mission was to help teach widows skills such as farming, animal rearing, bead making, and sewing, allowing them to create sustainable sources of income to support their families. At the time, WOCAP's biggest need was a larger market in which to sell the jewelry, which is produced using recycled paper and made by the Ugandan widows. After bringing back some of the jewelry to sell in the United States, Lemonnier created Because of Hope (BOH) to serve as a partner organization to WOCAP and facilitate the sale of the Ugandan jewelry on a larger scale, buying it directly from the craft workers at a fair market Ugandan sale price and then shipping it to and selling it in the U.S. The majority of the profits from these sales are then used to fund BOH and WOCAP's programs of sustainable, holistic development. By facilitating the large-scale sale of the handmade jewelry and aiding these marginalized women, BOH serves to implement means of sustainable development for individuals, thus empowering them to be agents of change within their own communities.

Additionally, in February 2013, after conducting needs assessment surveys of all the Ugandan women in WOCAP, it became clear that education was one of Uganda's most pressing needs, as many families are unable to afford the high cost of school fees and materials. In response, BOH, in partnership with WOCAP, who works locally in Uganda, launched the BOH Student Scholarship Program (BSSP) in order to provide scholarships directly to Ugandan children and give them the otherwise unlikely opportunity to attend school. Through this opportunity, BOH provides these children with the skills and strengths that only a true education can provide, equipping them with the academic skills to not only empower them, but also to create their own sustainable futures and prepare them to be positive influences on those around them.

There are currently 47 students in our Student Scholarship Program, between the ages of 5 and 25, receiving an education that would otherwise be financially unavailable to them, and approximately 225 women participating in our Beads Project earning a sustainable source of income to better support themselves and their families.

  • History:
  • Because of Hope (BOH) was founded in collaboration with the Ugandan non-profit WOCAP, or Widows and Orphans Community Action Plan in direct response to their communicated needs. While WOCAP was working to teach Ugandan widows the skills necessary for them to develop their own sustainable incomes, they lacked the larger market necessary for the women to earn the highest potential profit from the goods they were producing. Because of Hope (BOH) was thus founded as a partner organization to WOCAP to help them expand globally and increase their impact on the lives of the women involved with the organization.

In July 2011, Because of Hope was incorporated as a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization. In our first year of involvement with WOCAP, we were able to place bigger jewelry orders than the women in our Beads Project had ever had prior to the founding of BOH. In 2012, we increased our jewelry purchases from the Ugandan women by 154%, increasing the demand for their goods and increasingly helping them gain the resources to support their families. In 2013, BOH sold over $14,000 worth of jewelry, and in 2014, thanks to improved marketing and overall funding, we expect this figure to drastically increase to over $60,000. Overall, BOH’s involvement in the WOCAP project created a bigger market in which the women’s jewelry could be sold, leading to greater sales and incomes for the women, contributing to improvement of their living situations and helping them to buy essentials like food and even cell phones. When BOH purchases the jewelry directly from the women at the fair-market Ugandan price, the revenue is directly distributed among the craft workers. Profits made from jewelry sales in the United States are then used to fund other projects.

After just two years, jewelry sales became so successful that in February 2013, BOH was able to launch the Because of Hope Student Scholarship Program (BSSP) in direct response to the women’s expression of the tremendous difficulties they were having in paying their children’s school fees. The funding for this program was largely made possible through the drastic increase in jewelry sales from the Beads Project in 2012. Thus, the Beads Project not only benefitted the women by providing them with a stable source of income, but it also helped fund other programs to benefit these women and their children. For the 2014 Ugandan school year, which began in January 2014, BOH was able to provide forty-seven Ugandan students with complete school scholarships, including tuition and materials. BOH was also able to provide scholarships to three university students, giving them the opportunity to attain in-country higher education.

Thus, the individuals that benefit from our organization’s activities are the same women that participate in them. These women come from impoverished rural Ugandan villages without electricity or running water and have been left alone in the struggle to support themselves and their families after death or abandonment by their husbands. BOH strives to give these women the tools to improve their own quality of life, in addition to giving them the opportunity to improve the lives of their children through both financial and educational opportunities. Through this, BOH works to break the chain of Ugandan poverty by empowering these traditionally marginalized widows.
