  • Mission:
  • The Central Park Conservancy is a nonprofit organization driven by its mission to restore, manage, and enhance Central Park, in partnership with the public.

  • Overview:
  • The Conservancy is composed of more than 300 full-time and/or seasonal staff members who oversee specific aspects of the organization’s activities and help to maintain the outstanding level of quality the public has come to expect from the Conservancy. To manage all landscapes in the Park as effectively and evenly as possible, the organization employs a zone management system that divides Central Park into 49 zones, each with dedicated gardeners who are held accountable for their zone. Zone gardeners and other crews make up the 220 members of the Conservancy’s Operations staff, the Department charged with monitoring, maintaining, and preserving every acre of Central Park; including hundreds of thousands of plantings; 21,000 trees; 80 acres of woodlands; 150 acres of waterbodies; 26 ballfields; and 21 playgrounds.

Collectively, Conservancy staff care for more than 80 sculptures, monuments, and bridges; remove graffiti within 24 hours; and collect over 5 million pounds of trash a year—working diligently each day in rain or shine. Other staff members work at the Conservancy’s office in departments such as Marketing, Design and Construction, Education & Public Programs, Finance, Membership, Graphic Design, Development, Special Events, and other areas. Each employee is integral to helping the Conservancy realize its important work sustaining one of the most beautiful, recognizable, and beloved urban parks in the world.

In 2013, the City of New York awarded the Central Park Conservancy a new 10-year management agreement to ensure the continued maintenance of Central Park. Originally signed in 1988 and renewed in 2006, the 2013 contract affirms the City's confidence in its more than 33-year partnership with the Conservancy. Presently, 90% of the Park's maintenance operations staff is employed by the Conservancy, and the organization is responsible for raising the majority of Central Park's $58.3 million annual Park-wide expense budget through its fundraising and investment revenue. The City, in addition to providing an annual fee to the Conservancy for the services it provides, funds lighting, maintenance of the Park drives, and enforcement. Since its inception, the Conservancy has overseen the investment of $690M into Central Park, including $536M from private sources.

  • History:
  • Central Park is an 843-acre masterpiece of landscape architecture and one of New York City’s greatest cultural and historical treasures, welcoming approximately 40 million visits by 9 million individuals per year. Founded in 1980 by a core group of dedicated civic and philanthropic leaders who were determined to end Central Park’s dramatic decline of the 1970s, the Central Park Conservancy has taken great strides in returning the Park to its former splendor as originally envisioned by its designers Frederick Law Olmsted and Calvert Vaux. The Conservancy is responsible for what is now the longest period of sustained health in the Park’s history and has developed an expansive portfolio of urban park management strategies that serve to inspire and assist other parks around the world.
