  • Mission:
  • To provide exemplary customer service to all who live, visit or work in our City. We do this by treating each person equally, professionally, respectfully, and in a manner that promotes continued trust and confidence in our City.

  • Overview:
  • The City of El Mirage, Arizona encompasses slightly over 11 square miles and is located 15 miles northwest of downtown Phoenix. In the last ten years, the El Mirage population has grown more than four-fold to 32,000 currently. With affordable housinhg, proximity to Phoenix, and small town feel, the City has attracted two distinct groups of newcomers - young families looking to settle in their first homes and seniors looking for a less hurried pace and a strong sense of community connectedness. The City's boundaries are almost totally within the flight contours of Luke Air Force Base, the USAF's largest fighter pilot training facility in the world. City leaders' most important priorities are centered on business growth, support of Luke's mission, and environmental stewardship to sustain the community's continued viability. In the last year, El Mirage set aside more than 400 acres in the City's southern section as a foreign trade zone (FTZ) to bring businesses here that rely on significant import and export of products and equipment. The FTZ designation supports relief from several duty and excise taxes. All new City structures in the last two years including a new fire station, police station, and YMCA include solar arrays. In addition, City leaders permitted more than two acres of City-owned property to be set aside so that residents could have a public garden. The garden now boasts 39 individual garden boxes leased to youth groups, seniors, and many other garden enthusiasts. In March, the City will open its very first farmers' market on a site behind the community garden. Vendors selling natural, homemade, and hand crafted goods will be prominently represented.

  • History:
  • The earliest known inhabitants of El Mirage were the indigenous Hohokam people, an agricultural society that developed canals adjacent to the Agua Fria River to irrigate their crops. Some time around 1450, the Hohokam mysteriously disappeared from the area and the land lay inactive for the most part until the mid-1800’s when the Hohokam canals were retrenched and used for farming. The canals eventually became an integral part of much larger federal irrigation projects to provide a more assured water supply for agriculture throughout the Valley.

Migrant workers, primarily from Mexico, came to the area to help build canals, level the land, and harvest the first crops. These migrants founded El Mirage in 1937 as a permanent place to live and raise their families. The City was incorporated in 1951. Its farming residents would eventually become an important part of the farm labor advocacy movement which emerged in the 1970’s to protect the civil and human rights of agricultural workers in the U.S., as well as Mexico and Central America.

Luke Air Force Base, located just southwest of the City, was established in 1941 to take advantage of the area’s then isolated location and year-round flying weather to train the country’s premier fighter pilots.
