  • Mission:
  • The mission of American Farmland Trust is to save America's farm and ranch land, promote sound farming practices and keep farmers on the land.

  • Overview:
  • Each year, the U.S. loses 50 acres of farmland every hour to development, with our most valuable soils and cropland at the highest risk for conversion. The loss of the nation's farmland threatens our food security, water, wildlife habitat, economy—and the landscapes that make up the fabric of America. American Farmland Trust (AFT) was created in 1980 to address this critical issue and remains the only organization working nationally on this need. We are active in America’s most threatened places working to save both acres of farmland and inches of precious topsoil.

  • History:
  • Founded in 1980 by farmers and conservationists concerned about rapid loss of farmland to development, American Farmland Trust (AFT) is a nonprofit dedicated to saving farmland and keeping the land healthy. Working with farmers, political leaders and communities, AFT has helped to permanently protect more than five million acres of America's best farm and ranch land. In California, AFT works with diverse communities to establish programs for farmland protection and stewardship. We partner with groups to increase support for farming and environmental enhancement; raise public awareness about values shared between farmers and environmentalists; and engage urban and rural leaders to develop farmland protection and stewardship strategies.
