  • Our Mission Statement

Central Utah Food Sharing is committed to addressing the issues of hunger in our six-county region. In doing so we intend to treat clients, personnel and volunteers with respect, dignity and confidentiality. We do not discriminate against anyone concerning their personal beliefs, race, color, religion, national origin, sex, age or disability. We will be responsible stewards of donations and funds for those who give and those that receive. We are dedicated to pursue a course of action that allows for integrity and fair and compassionate responses to all qualified clients. We will provide emergency assistance to those in need, by doing so we assist them in becoming more self-sufficient. We also truly believe that everyone who gives also receives.

  • Overview:
  • We are the regional food pantry in central Utah. We cover 5 counties. Sevier, Wayne, Piute, Millard and Juab. Our pantries serve approximately 2,112 people in a month some months are higher. We serve low-income and fixed in-come families on a monthly basis. We have homebound program to help those that can not get to the pantries. We partner with several other programs to help them get the help we don't provide.

  • History:

HOW CUFS WAS FOUNDED. In early 1987, a group of concerned citizens headed by Reverend Jeff Porter, got together and wanted to do something to help the low income population in this area of Utah. They found that many individuals and families were struggling to provide enough food for themselves. Since there are many regulations on who may receive food stamps, many low income people do not qualify for that program. In Utah, there has also been the theory that the church took care of the needs of the people. Although the churches are a major resource for its members, they simply do not meet the needs of everyone. After talking to many local residents, and with folks on the state level, it was decided to start a food bank.

Six County organization had some funds available. They offered these funds to CUFS, under the condition that the funds be used to purchase food supplies only, and that the food must be made available to people in all six counties…..Sevier, Sanpete, Millard, Wayne, Piute, Juab. Further research found that to find funding for one small lone food pantry was almost impossible. It was to our advantage, and to the benefit of the entire area, to become a regional food bank with a network for food pantries under our umbrella.

Actual operations of CUFS began in July of 1987. We began with two pantries. One in Richfield and one in Mt. Pleasant. (Sanpete County). The third pantry opened in Delta (Millard County) in the spring of 1988. Very shortly after that, the pantries in Junction (Piute County) and in Bicknell (Wayne County) opened. The pantry in Nephi (Juab County) did not come into being for approximately another two years.

CUFS became a “non-profit corporation” registered with the state of Utah in July of 1987. At that same time Sandra Hanover became the Program Director. We are not funded by the state and so she had the painstaking job of finding ongoing resources of income. She found grants and sources that we still us today. She moved to Logan in 1998 and Linda Gale was hired to be the Program Director. In 2005 Roene Shaw was hired to be the Executive Director.

In 2013 we had to separate from Mt. Pleasant.

As a non-profit organization, CUFS is required to have a volunteer Board of Directors. Larry Lloyd is our Executive Director of that board with Mary Lee Harrison as Vice President and Linda Gale as Secretary/Treasurer.
