General

  • Mission:
  • Mission Statement: CARE Chest is a Northern Nevada nonprofit agency serving individuals in need by providing medical resources, free of charge.

  • Overview:
  • CARE Chest of Sierra Nevada is a nonprofit agency dedicated to providing medical resources to Northern Nevadans who lack the insurance or the funds to afford medical items they desperately need to maintain or regain their health. Even with changes to the healthcare system, low-income families will continue to face significant obstacles when injured or diagnosed with a condition requiring out-of-pocket expenses for a medical item or medication. CARE Chest’s focus on free, immediate and tangible assistance can help families avoid sacrificing their health to put food on the table or keep a roof over their head.

Clients qualify for services and gain immediate access to all CARE Chest programs by simply completing an application and providing proof of Nevada residency and proof of household income. Our income guidelines require that a qualifying individual live at 138% of the Federal Poverty Level or below; the majority of our clients earn less than $1,100 a month. 59% of our clients are women, and 8% are children, ages 18 and under. In 2013, CARE Chest provided 8,779 client services.

The following is a summary of CARE Chest's programs:

    • Durable Medical Equipment Program: Provides mobility and assistive devices, including wheelchairs, walkers, power-operated vehicles, hospital beds, shower chairs, safety grab bars and other equipment that ensures the safety and independence of seniors, people with disabilities and those recovering from injury.
    • Diabetic Program: Glucose meters, test strips, lancets, syringes and $100 annually in prescription aid for diabetes medications.
    • Emergency Prescription Program: Provides immediate assistance for cardiac, respiratory, antibiotic and anti-seizure medications. Adults are eligible for up to $50 in assistance annually and children and adults with disabilities have access to $100 annually.
    • Liquid Nutrition Program: Serving the medically malnourished through monthly instant breakfast and liquid nutrition supplies.
    • Respiratory Program: Nebulizers, tubing and other respiratory care items for people suffering from asthma and other diseases that impede normal breathing.
    • Consumable Supplies Program: Incontinence supplies, ostomy products, gauze, gloves, wound care, and lice shampoo are available on a monthly basis.
    • CARE Loan Program: Low-interest loans for people with disabilities to purchase Assistive Technologies.
    • Independent Living: Home and vehicle modifications for people with disabilities to enable them to live independently and safely.
    • Wellness Education Program: Regular workshops designed to teach healthy lifestyle choices.

  • History:
  • CARE Chest was founded in 1990 by three local pharmacists as a grassroots effort to recycle medical equipment, an effort that became the Durable Medical Equipment Loan program. Since that time, the organization has grown into a multi-service nonprofit agency recognized by area hospitals and social service agencies as a vital medical resource for Northern Nevada’s most vulnerable populations. Additional programs, including the Emergency Prescription Program in 1993 and the Diabetic, Respiratory and Liquid Nutrition Programs in 1997, were added as service gaps were identified by local health organizations and our constituents.

Since its founding, the CARE Chest’s purpose has been to improve the quality of life for those who lack the financial resources to purchase items that are medically necessary for their health and well-being. From 334 Northern Nevadans served in 1992 to 8,779 in 2013, CARE Chest remains the community resource that local children and adults count on. To date, more than 100,000 people have relied on CARE Chest for the medical items needed to reclaim their health, maintain their independence, stay safe in their own homes and reengage with their communities.
