  • Mission:
  • To inspire and enable young people, especially those youth from disadvantaged circumstances and backgrounds, to realize their full potential as productive, responsible and caring citizens that achieve their highest goals.

  • Overview:
  • The Community Boys and Girls Club is part of a nationwide Movement of community-based, autonomous organizations and Boys & Girls Club of America (BGCA) working to help youth of all backgrounds develop the qualities needed to become responsible citizens and leaders. Community Boys and Girls Club serves youth from New Hanover, Pender and Brunswick Counties that have many risk factors that jeopardize their academic success and behavior patterns. More than 90% of the Community Boys and Girls Club has a female as head of household and 98% of members fall below the poverty line. These club statistics makes our members at the highest rate for dropping out of school and in the greatest need of our services.

  • History:
  • July 1937 marked the month and year that concern citizens of Wilmington met with A.A. Montgomery and other prominent members of the community to make plans to secure a facility for a Boys Club in Wilmington with Dr. F. W. Avant coordinating the movement as President. In November of the same year the New Hanover Board of Education granted the infant organization the use of Williston's Domestic Science Building. For the subsequent years until 1940 the club operated on voluntary contribution and had difficulty raising funds to meet budget demands. In 1940, the demands of budget deed a weight too heavy for the three year old organization and they ceased to operate.
Three years after the newly founded club ceased to operate, a Community Chest was formed and the Club reorganized with funding from the Chest. Mr. Carl Moultrie served as Chairman for the organization.
As anticipated, in June 1944, Community Chest allocated 4,279 dollars for the Club operation.
From 1944 until 1977 the Club operated without any community alliances. In 1977, the Club united with the Salvation Army and combined their efforts to raise more than a million dollars for two new facilities. Mr. Dan Cameron served as Chairman of the Combined Capital Campaign of the two organizations. The monies raised from the efforts afforded the Club to purchase their new facility and in September of 1979, the new building was dedicated fro community use,

The Club continued to function and operate serving a number of young men and gentlemen; in June 1994 when the organization changed its corporate name to the
Community Boys and Girls Club of Wilmington, NC Inc., in order to reflect its changing demographics. Operating under the newly adopted name of the Community Boys and Girls Club of Wilmington, NC Inc., the Club now serves over 800 youth a month with core programming standards that influence every part of the children's lives and provide them with a positive place to grow into responsible, civic-minded citizens.
