General

  • Mission:
  • The mission of Children Today is to foster long-term stability and success in children and families who are facing homelessness or who are involved in the child welfare system. We do this by providing trauma-informed child development and family support services.

Our vision is that all children under age six who have experienced homelessness or abuse and neglect will have a safe, nurturing place to spend their days playing, learning and growing, while their parents take steps towards stability.

  • Overview:
  • Children Today is a non-profit organization dedicated to providing high-quality, trauma-informed child development and support services to families who are facing homelessness or those who are involved in the child welfare system. We operate two facilities – The Play House West and The Play House North – that meet the daily needs of children, ages six weeks to six years, and their families.

The Play House programs offer developmentally appropriate and specialized care which children experiencing the traumatic effects of homelessness or abuse/neglect need. Children Today also provides family support services to help parents achieve stability. We work with partner agencies of the Long Beach Continuum of Care Homeless Assistance Program to coordinate services such as: housing placement, medical care, substance abuse intervention, job training and placement, rental assistance, and legal aid. Other program partners provide additional services and supports including counseling, parenting education, and behavioral, language, and cognitive assessments and interventions.

  • History:
  • Children Today was founded in 1997 by two mothers who recognized a serious unmet need for the care of young children experiencing homelessness. In 2000, Children Today opened the Play House West - a free, licensed child development facility serving 32 children between the ages of six weeks and six years, who were experiencing homelessness in Long Beach. In 2008, we opened a second facility - the Play House North - doubling our service capacity.

In 2012, Children Today expanded our scope of service to include families involved in the child welfare system. We did this for two reasons: 1) there is a considerable overlap between children who have been homeless and those who have experienced abuse and neglect, and 2) the effects of both types of trauma manifest themselves in similar ways in young children.

For well over 15 years, Children Today has been an advocate for some of the most vulnerable members of our community. Since our inception, the combined impact of the Play House West and Play House North has reached thousands of children and families in Long Beach.
