  • Mission:
  • AVA exists to educate, empower and enhance the quality of life for individuals that will promote self-sufficiency, financial stability and economic development. We provide supervision and guidance to many of the disadvantage and deprived youth within the local vicinity. We assist the SCLC of Pinellas in eradicating racial and ethnic disparities with a focus on disease prevention, social and environmental factors that affect health and wellness. We are also a business incubator designed to instill a higher degree of education relating to skill building and employment cross training; design and implement programs that will empower disadvantaged individuals, organizations and small businesses in order to lead them toward a path of financial stability and self-sufficiency.

  • Overview:
  • Teaching high-risk, inner-city youth the skills to become successful in life are at the core of the AVA Hands, our development program. The five major components of the program are:
    • Homework assistance through tutoring, mentoring and use of computer labs
    • Nutrition education to promote healthy lifestyles and combat obesity
    • Expressionism & Life skills which are integrated throughout all phases of the program
    • Athletic instruction where participants engage in fun physical fitness, enjoy the camaraderie of playing in a team structure with friends and peers, and learn to become responsible adolescents and adults
    • Financial empowerment provides education in the areas of financial literacy, personal investing, small business development and homeownership

Jordan Park, with significantly higher than average incidences of crime, truancy, teen pregnancy, obesity, and drug use, suffers from a lack of constructive activities for its youth. Visionaries saw the potential benefits of a quality afterschool and summer program. To provide a safe haven for the inner-city youth, AVA developed a youth baseball and basketball program, and adheres to the First Serve Life Skills Curriculum. Since its inception, the program has gained a positive reputation for providing constructive activities that contribute to reducing crime and illicit activity, increasing academic performance, and providing life skills to ensure success in school, in the community and in life.

  • History:
  • In the six short years since its founding, the Advantage Village Academy has played a major role in the transformation of Jordan Park community from a town with too many unproductive, unsupervised kids with too much time to get into trouble to one providing these youth with a valuable structured program. We are located in the Jordan Park community within the Midtown district where 36.7% of residents collect social security, 32% of families are below poverty and 11.4% are unemployed. The Jordan Park Community located has a median income of $17,700 and comprised of many single parent households.
AVA believes all students should have access to quality education. Our program aims to enhance our youth's development by providing a higher level of academic, athletic, financial & cultural enrichment. We seek to accomplish this goal through social development, educational labs and training. The program aims to enhance student success by reducing the absenteeism and dropout rate, providing a higher level of academic and cultural enrichment, increasing parental involvement and improving overall perceptions about public schools.

Participants receive athletic instruction in one-on-one and group settings, and practice skills in team format play. They learn about rules of the game, etiquette, sportsmanship, positive attitudes, fair play, self-esteem, taking responsibility for choices, and management of emotions. These life skills are integrated throughout the basketball & baseball programs, and instructors routinely demonstrate how they apply to situations in all aspects of life.

AVA provides outreach, education, one-on-one counseling towards financial empowerment as well as quality education. We contract with Kids Invest and Advantage Financial Services to provide education in the areas of financial literacy, personal investing, small business development and homeownership. This partnership has taken several forms, but has always focused on working together to help minority individuals and families attain their dreams of financial independence. We host quarterly workshops on personal investing and business development. All workshops are taught by licensed professionals and volunteers of and Kids Invest and Advantage Financial Services.
