  • Mission:
  • With a deeply held belief in educational justice, the Coalition for Engaged Education’s (CEE) mission is to provide innovative educational opportunities to the most at-risk and under-served young people in Los Angeles through which they can transform their lives from one of hopelessness and poor social outcomes to one of possibility and achievement. CEE is also driven to serve as a catalyst for educational and social innovation on a national level. To reach this goal, CEE is requesting $10,000 from the Lawrence Foundation to support its three main programs: CEE Hope, CEE Forward, and CEE Lennox.

  • Overview:
  • CEE was founded with the core belief that all children deserve to be equipped for success and for that to be achieved, their social, educational, emotional, and physical needs have to be met. CEE’s holistic approach creates environments and communities that cultivate youths’ professional, intellectual, and personal growth.

The evolution of the programs and philosophy of CEE has led to an organization that provides comprehensive services to at-risk youth and their families that enable them to develop both themselves and their future lives and careers. Uniting every CEE program are three core elements: connecting children with a passion, helping them visualize a new path and design a long-term life plan, and a long-term relationship with a caring adult. Our model of engagement, mentoring, and long-term involvement has transformed the lives of thousands of youth, enabling them to break out of the confines of poverty that have ensnared them. It is CEE’s goal to spread these principles nationwide.

  • History:
  • Founded in 1994 as New Visions, CEE was created as a social justice nonprofit dedicated to spreading founder Dr. Paul Cummins’ engaged education philosophy and practices to the diverse populations of vulnerable youth in Los Angeles. The first implementation of Engaged Education began when he co-founded renowned Crossroads School in Santa Monica in 1971. This is where he developed his pedagogy that children need to be proficient in all forms of education: not just the traditional disciplines of history, literature, language, math, and science, but also arts, environmental studies, human development, athletics and community service. He recognized the need for students to develop a passion, connect to nurturing adults and create a life plan that allowed them to live their life’s purpose.

CEE’s first project was the creation of New Roads School, which took the Crossroads educational model and brought it to a more diverse student body. 50% of New Roads students receive some form of financial aid, and the school is committed to all forms of diversity. From there, CEE expanded to co-launch three notable charter schools. It also launched programs for the most under-resourced youth in Los Angeles County: juvenile offenders, foster children, and children in exceptionally impoverished neighborhoods. From this foundation, CEE has developed to become an organization that addresses not only the education of a student, but all of the factors that contribute to a successful life: the emotional, social, physical, and psychological health of students as well as the vitality of the communities they are living in.
