  • Mission:
  • The Columbia Oral Health Clinic (COHC) mission is to ensure access to high quality oral health care services for adults living with HIV/AIDS, dissemination of treatment information, advocacy; training, integration and evaluation of oral health services for persons living with HIV/AIDS and those that meet our admission criteria.

  • Overview:
  • The COHC provides free oral examinations and diagnosis, oral cancer screenings, full or partial dentures, extractions, restorations, cleanings/oral health education, and limited endodontic treatment to the uninsured HIV/AIDS population of the Midlands. Our vision is to continue to act as a leader and model in providing state-of-the-art oral health care free of charge to adults living with HIV/AIDS who are uninsured.
The principles and values of the COHC are simple: improved oral health of patients served by the COHC benefits their overall health. The COHC’s HIV/AIDS patients have direct improvement in their overall health, and experience extended benefits in the enhancement of their self-esteem and in their employability. Thanks to basic oral health and dental services through the COHC, our patients are able to eat a healthy, nutritious meal, which, in turn, makes it easier for them to take their HIV anti-retroviral medication properly. The mental and emotional health of those served by COHC is also greatly improved because they have the ability to smile, feel self-confident, and are motivated to secure employment.

  • History:
  • Oral health among South Carolina's HIV/AIDS population is astoundingly poor. Lack of oral care and oral health awareness contribute to many serious life threatening diseases, such as diabetes and heart disease; however, there are very few options in South Carolina for people without health insurance, or who are underinsured, to obtain affordable oral health care. Specifically, the majority of HIV/AIDS patients have few options for their oral health care needs. Making matters worse, South Carolina is one of the "Top 10 Hotspots" for HIV in the nation. Research done by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention found that Columbia, SC was ranked 11th among the nation's metropolitan areas for new HIV/AIDS cases annually, and Richland County led all other counties in South Carolina for HIV/AIDS cases. (SC DHEC, 2009) (CDC, 2009)
In South Carolina, uninsured/underinsured adults living with HIV/AIDS often grow up in generational poverty, and suffer from a lifetime of poor oral health and lack of education concerning preventative measures for their oral health. The founders of COHC developed this group after seeing the debilitating effects to the general health of South Carolina's HIV/AIDS population. Those with health and dental insurance can obtain services from the private sector, but too often this segment of the population does not have insurance, and has grown up not seeing a dentist regularly except to have a tooth extracted (most often to relieve the pain of the decay). They generally do not understand preventative oral health care, and even if they do, such care is financially out of reach. There is a great need for quality oral health services and education for adults living with HIV/AIDS in the Midlands of South Carolina.
Medical Personnel in the Midlands recognized in the late 1990's that it was difficult to ward off infection among HIV positive residents because of tooth decay and gum disease. Private dentists refused to treat persons living with HIV. Concerned citizens rallied to form The Columbia Oral Health Clinic. In 1998, COHC joined forces with the Women's Shelter to establish a dental clinic in a renovated building behind the Women's Shelter on North Main Street. Currently, the COHC is the only oral health clinic specifically serving the uninsured HIV/AIDS population in South Carolina, and one of the few in the nation. As of December 2013, COHC has recorded 29,235 patient visits since inception.
The COHC is providing a service for a population of people who would otherwise not be able to obtain quality oral health care. Regular dentists will not serve those living with HIV/AIDS. Thus, this lack of oral care and oral health awareness contribute to many serious life threatening diseases, such as diabetes and heart disease, to name a few. The COHC was established to meet this need, and to serve as many of these patients that are living with HIV/AIDS in the Midlands of South Carolina as possible. Since the COHC is the only oral health clinic of its kind, it is an innovative solution to a serious and growing problem, and we continuously seek funding in order to meet this increase of HIV/AIDS positive patients each year.
