  • Mission:
  • Head Start is a component department of Community Action Partnership of Cambria County (CAPCC), a non-profit organization with the following mission statement. Community Action changes peoples' lives, embodies the spirit of hope, improves communities, and makes America a better place to live. We care about the entire community, and we are dedicated to helping people help themselves and each other.

  • History:
  • Head Start is a federally funded entitlement grant program started by Lyndon Johnson as a help to fix poverty and provide meals to poor children. Head Start first began as a six week summer program where poor children received meals and did some crafts with other kids. It later grew to a multi-billion dollar funded program that provides comprehensive services to preschool aged children and their families. Head Start provides education, nutrition, health services, medical and dental services and referrals, transportation, literarcy, and socialization with age-appropriate peers. Head Start also assists parents with many poverty issues and encourages families to become self-sufficient. This an income-eligibility program where families are at 100% of the poverty guideline.
