  • Mission:
  • The mission of CitySquare is to fight the causes and effects of poverty through service, advocacy and friendship.

  • Overview:
  • CitySquare is unique because we are a community of neighbors investing in each other and developing meaningful relationships which value each individual. We don’t fight poverty for the poor—we fight poverty with the poor. We value and promote the benefits of open-handed partnerships, requiring commitment and contribution from everyone. We bring together resources from the public sector, the business sector, the legal sector, and the medical sector to do the work that will represent a profound investment in our neighbors and the community.

In 2013, with these core values the foundation for our pillars of hunger, health, housing and hope, CitySquare was able to do the following:

Hunger: Our Food Pantry distributed nearly 1 million pounds of groceries and served over 20,000 unduplicated neighbors. Food on the Move, which distributes meals to at-risk children and youth, distributed over 1 million summer lunches to over 20,000 children and youth in Dallas, Austin, Houston, and San Antonio.

Health: The doctors and nurses of our Community Health Services (CHS) clinic saw more than 2,000 patients, providing healthcare to the uninsured and underinsured. We filled over 4,000 prescriptions for neighbors who could not otherwise afford medication and saw more than 800 children who received care from a pediatrician through the clinic. Nearly 1,000 consultations were made with diabetics through our nationally recognized diabetes education program, CoDE.

Housing: Our Destination Home program provided permanent supportive housing to more than 200 formerly homeless neighbors. CityWalk@Akard, our 15-story vertical community, provided permanent supportive housing for nearly 300 formerly homeless or low-income individuals.

Hope: Legal Action Works (LAW) provided legal assistance to more than 400 individuals seeking help through our family law program. Our job training program, WorkPaths, provided training for more than 300 neighbors in construction and computer skills who were in need of a livable wage job. Transition Resource Action Center (TRAC) offered life skills and supportive services for more than 900 foster youth aging out of the foster care system. The Homeless Outreach Team (HOT) gave immediate assistance to more than 700 homeless individuals in downtown Dallas. Our Public Policy programs continued to advocate for systematic changes that perpetuate the cycles of poverty.

  • History:
  • Since 1988, we have grown from a small food pantry into a broad community development organization offering a wide range of social services. Our more than 121 employees and 14 programs provide over 50,000 human touches per year to Dallas-area residents who are in need, focus on the following four core values:

COMMUNITY: We are a community of neighbors investing in each other and developing meaningful relationships which value each individual.

FAITH: Our work flows out of our faith and that faith is inclusive and ecumenical.

JUSTICE: We stand for justice and demand equality for all our neighbors.

STEWARDSHIP: Our resources belong to the community and as stewards of those resources, we will act with integrity, demonstrate accountability and operate efficiently and effectively.

For more than 25 years, we have addressed the causes and effects of poverty, both on an individual and systemic level. This combined with our unyielding commitment to stewardship makes CitySquare a proven leader in our community and beyond.
