  • Mission:
  • Court Appointed Special Advocates (CASA) of Grayson County, Inc., is a 501 c 3 charitable non-profit agency that provides trained, court-appointed volunteers who investigate, monitor, and serve as advocates in court to help abused and neglected children secure permanent placement in safe, nurturing homes.

Each year, numerous children between the ages of newborn to 17 years old are removed from abusive and neglectful homes by Children's Protective Services and placed in foster care. Immediately upon placement in foster care, our district judges appoint CASA as their Guardian ad Litem (GAL). As the GAL and with court order in hand, our volunteers visit the child, visit the child’s home, and interview the parents and other family members. The volunteers also interview anyone else connected to the case who may have pertinent information: doctors/nurses and other health care professionals, teachers, school counselors, neighbors, and many others. Armed with this information, the CASA/GAL prepares a court report, and then submits that report to the court during subsequent hearings. The CASA/GAL testifies to their findings and makes recommendations to the judge regarding the best possible services and placement for the child or children.

CASA volunteers are community residents who have received extensive specialized training and who undergo additional training each year of service.

Texas legislation requires that each of these cases be concluded in 12 months, but when necessary a 6-month extension can be granted thereby, requiring that cases be handled in the most timely manner.

  • History:
  • CASA began in 1977 in Seattle, WA by a judge who felt he was lacking information on his child abuse cases. In order to ensure he was making decisions in the best interest of these children, he made a public plea for volunteers to assist him in his fact-finding. Fifty-five citizens answered that plea and so began a national endeavor.

CASA of Grayson County, Inc. was also brought about by a judge who felt more information was necessary in child abuse cases. In 1993, Judge Lloyd Perkins was instrumental in bringing together local citizens who then developed the local program. In 1994, CASA of Grayson County received its first case. At that time, there were two part-time Casework Supervisors. Today, CASA of Grayson County has three fulltime Casework Supervisors, one part-time Casework Supervisor, a Program Manager, an Administrative Assistant and an Executive Director. Unfortunately as the number of child abuse cases increase CASA's need to continue advocating for these children grows as well.
