  • Mission:
  • The Mission of Boulder County AIDS Project (BCAP) is twofold:
to provide support, advocacy and education to those in our community who are infected with or affected by the Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV) and to serve as an outreach and information center to prevent further transmission of HIV and the resulting Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndrome (AIDS).

  • Overview:
  • BCAP utilizes proven treatment and prevention strategies to decrease the spread of HIV in the community. Research has demonstrated that early and effective HIV treatment strategies, like those utilized at BCAP, decrease the viral load of clients. Having a lower viral load decreases the risk of infecting others with HIV. One global comprehensive study found that early initiation of anti-retroviral therapy led to a 96 percent reduction in HIV transmission to study participants’ uninfected partners (HIV Prevention Trials Network, 2011). In addition to catchment area residents, the agency continues to focus its HIV Care and Prevention Services on Men having Sex with Men (MSM), young people and Latinos, as recent trends demonstrate existing or emerging risks for these populations. In 2013, BCAP’s Care Services clients were:
    • 68 percent Caucasian, 23 percent Hispanic/Latino and five percent African American
    • 41 percent were 25-44 years of age and 52 percent were between 45 and 64
    • 48 percent live on less than $11,490 per year ($958 per month)
    • 65 percent have no health insurance

  • History:
  • Boulder County AIDS Project (BCAP) was founded in 1985 in response to the crisis of the U.S. AIDS epidemic. Over the past 29 years, BCAP has provided innovative, comprehensive and inclusive HIV and AIDS-related services free of charge to thousands of youth, men, women and seniors in Boulder, Broomfield, Gilpin, and Clear Creek counties. BCAP is one of two AIDS Service Organizations in Colorado, each serving unique and unduplicated client areas. BCAP has offices in Boulder and Longmont and serves nearly half of the 518 people living with HIV and/or AIDS in the agency’s catchment area (Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment, 2012).
