General

  • Mission:
  • Cancer Legal Line (CALL) provides caring and compassionate pro bono legal services to Minnesotans affected by cancer.

Our mission is to provide legal care to Minnesota cancer patients, survivors and their loved ones so that they may better focus their energies on healing rather than an endless state of anxiety and worry.

CALL’s goals are to (1) provide direct legal services in key areas of substantive law (such as wills, navigating disability insurance and planning for the care of minor children, etc.) of vast importance to cancer patients/survivors which are not traditionally handled by Legal Aid, and (2) counsel and, if appropriate, connect clients with other legal services providers to avoid duplication of services.

CALL helps our clients meet basic needs through legal care in the following areas (I-Help): Insurance coverage, Housing, Employment, Legal Planning and Public Benefits.

  • Overview:
  • CALL is the only, go-to resource for Minnesota’s cancer community (providers, survivors, cancer diagnosed people and their families) who need help with a legal issue(s) arising from their diagnosis but who cannot afford to pay for an attorney’s help. We can then help people focus their energy on treatment and healing rather than an endless loop of worry and anxiety about finances, employment, estate planning, planning for care of minor children and other legal concerns.

Many of our clients are already in difficult financial and/or family situations. When they receive their cancer diagnosis they can be left feeling hopeless and desperate. When they contact CALL they communicate directly with an attorney. We can help address their concerns and connect and/or provide them with the resources they need. We are the only such service in the upper Midwest and our assistance has proven to be vital.

The majority of the people we serve are in the Greater Twin Cities or in the Twin Cities receiving treatment. We strive to serve any Minnesotan regardless of their county lived in.

  • History:
  • Cancer Legal Line (CALL) was founded in 2005 with the simple premise that sometimes a lawyer's help is exactly what a cancer patient needs to assist them on their road to recovery. Since beginning to provide services to the Minnesota cancer community 1,439 Minnesotans have turned to Cancer Legal Line for this exact reason.

Our origins start with our founder Lindy Yokanovich who realized the need for a free legal resource for the cancer community and when exploring options, realized this type of service didn't exist in the upper Midwest. This was just wrong! She put on her can-do and her attorney hat and got to work creating what is now Cancer Legal Line (CALL). Shortly after having this vision Lindy was joined by J. Lindsay Flint who agreed to provide her assistance in establishing CALL. Both women are attorneys who have seen the impact cancer has on their own families, their friends and their community at large. Instead of focusing on the problems, they focused on resolutions and have been met with an enthusiastic response from medical and legal organizations who too had recognized this unmet need for legal services.

Each year since inception our client service numbers have grown. This increase is not due to an uptick in cancer diagnoses or surge in legal issues, rather it is simply because generous funding has allowed our capacity to increase over time from one volunteer staff person to a paid staff of three attorneys and two part-time support staff. This has allowed us to grow our outreach to the cancer community and the number of people served.

CALL has a history of strong collaboration with the legal, cancer, and medical communities. These cross-disciplinary relationships serve as the main driving force behind the success we have enjoyed and have allowed Cancer Legal Line to have an impact in the lives of our clients beyond what the practical limits of our capacity would otherwise suggest. The history of these relationships, their origins and future plans are highlighted below:

Legal Community: CALL’s mission offers attorneys a way to fulfill their professional obligation to do pro bono work in their area of expertise and for a cause with which many have a very profound and personal connection. Since our inception, we have worked very closely with dozens of attorneys and law firms throughout the state and enjoy excellent professional relationships with other legal service providers, including the Minnesota Justice Foundation, Minnesota Continuing Legal Education, Minnesota Volunteer Attorney Program, Volunteer Lawyers Network and the National Cancer Legal Service Providers Network.

Cancer Community: Since our inception, CALL has worked closely across all planes of the cancer community to reach out to those in need. Our early relationships with LIVESTRONG Foundation, Angel Foundation, Leukemia & Lymphoma Society, Minnesota Ovarian Cancer Alliance, Minnesota Cancer Alliance, American Cancer Society-Midwest Division, National Marrow Donor Program, Susan G. Komen Minnesota and cancer specific support groups throughout the Twin Cities continue and have provided a solid base of resource and program sharing, and referrals.

Medical Community: CALL works with many oncology health care providers throughout the greater Twin Cities metro in providing group presentations, sharing resources and ideas for outreach, and serving as a resource to refer their patients in need. These organizations include University of Minnesota, Masonic Cancer Center, Park Nicollet, Minnesota Oncology, Virginia Piper/Abbott Northwestern, and the Minnesota Department of Health, Cancer Control Section.
The challenges and opportunities CALL faces are really two sides of the same coin: increased need in the cancer community for the help CALL alone provides and the capacity as an organization to meet this growing need.

In recent years the face of cancer survivor-ship is changing. The good news is that people are being diagnosed earlier and also surviving their cancer longer than ever before. The bad news is that all too often they are surviving into bankruptcy, and unemployment rates over three times that of the non-cancer community. This is where CALL has historically come in and assisted people and their families navigate the legal landscape.
