General

  • Mission:
  • Our mission is to deepen relationships between people and the land through school and community gardening.

  • Overview:
  • Classroom in Bloom is a ¾ acre garden and small orchard located on the campus of the Methow Valley School District. Now in our 12th year, we offer hands-on garden education to over 300 students each year, grades K-7. These students visit the garden each week in season and also receive a visit from Classroom in Bloom (CiB) staff once per month in the classroom during the winter. Students from the high school participate in the garden through Foods, Construction, and Art classes. We provide hands-on experiential learning that gives our students a multi-sensory experience in the garden, as well as contextualized academic learning in science, math, social studies, art, and language arts. Students develop a positive relationship with healthy work and a taste for diverse fresh fruits and vegetables.

An exciting new development for Classroom in Bloom is the Methow Valley School District’s application to become a candidate school in the International Baccalaureate (IB) program. As a part of this process, the district is adopting the Primary Years Program (PYP) in the elementary school. This is well-timed with the evolution of CiB’s curriculum development. Our lessons are perfectly suited to the interdisciplinary and inquiry-based approach of the IB educational framework. Classroom in Bloom works closely with teachers to make our nutrition and garden studies integral to the transdisciplinary themes studied in the classroom.

Classroom in Bloom also uses our garden to provide the school district with a year-round composting system, serving both Liberty Bell High School and Methow Valley Elementary School. In partnership with cafeteria staff, we collect lunchroom waste, bring it to our composting area, and turn it into beautiful, rich soil for our garden. Students participate actively in this process, which is an important part of the science curriculum.

Our garden is quite productive, each year producing over 2,000 pounds of vegetables to contribute to the school cafeteria. We have developed a strong relationship with the cafeteria staff and work with them to adjust the amounts and varieties of crops we grow to best serve the cafeteria’s needs.

An important part of our program is eating. We have found that children love to eat the food they help to grow. This experience creates a deep understanding of the importance of food. In our garden, we eat fresh snacks at the end of each garden activity period, exposing our students to a wide variety of fruits and vegetables. During CiB staff’s monthly classroom visits in wintertime, we, alternate between garden science/planning and cooking. We teach our students basic cooking skills, and use simple in-season recipes to prepare (and then enjoy eating) dishes that incorporate produce they helped to harvest from the garden.
