The meal schedule is as follows:

    • 6:30 – 7:00 a.m. for BHC sheltered single adults and hungry community members*
    • 7:00 – 7:30 a.m. for BHC sheltered families
    • 12:00 – 12:30 p.m. for BHC sheltered single adults and families only
    • 4:30 – 5:00 p.m. for BHC sheltered single adults and hungry community members*
    • 5:00 – 5:30 p.m. for BHC sheltered families
    * The term “hungry community members” refers to individuals and families who do not reside at the shelter, but nevertheless turn to BHC for assistance in meeting their nutritional needs.

    BHC is located in Bakersfield, which is located in Kern County, CA. Bakersfield has a population of 347,483, making it the ninth largest city in California. The BHC campus is located at 1600 East Truxtun Ave. in the 93305 zip code, an area with a high concentration of poverty within the city. Kern County covers approximately 8,200 square miles with an estimated 840,000 residents, encompasses 11 incorporated cities and 44 unincorporated communities, and is situated within the 27,280 square miles of central California’s San Joaquin Valley.

    Clients Served

    Clients receiving services are homeless families with children, single women, and a small number of men (14 beds are available for men). In addition to shelter clients, needy members of the community may also receive breakfast and/or dinner; clothing, hygiene, and grocery items. During fiscal year 2013-14, the racial breakdown of clients was as follows: 2% American Indian or Alaska Native; 3% Native Hawaiian or Other Pacific Islander; 21% African American; 24% white; 46% Hispanic; 4% Asian or Mixed/Other. Moreover, 49% of clients were adults and 51% were children; 34% were male and 66% were female; and 100% of clients were no-to low-income.

    During FY 2013-14, BHC provided 754 homeless clients (this number does not include those who do not reside at the shelter, but none the less turn to BHC for assistance in meeting their nutritional needs) with the following:
    • 193,333 meals to sheltered homeless clients and members of the community struggling with hunger;
    • 64,784 shelter bed nights;
    • 169,764 articles of clothing distributed to sheltered homeless clients and disadvantaged members of the community;
    • 23,001 hygiene items distributed to sheltered homeless clients and members of the community;
    • 45,085 grocery items distributed to members of the community struggling with hunger, as well as to formerly homeless clients who were enrolled in BHC’s Aftercare Program to prevent a return to homelessness;
    • 395 clients exited the program into permanent housing; and
    • 95 adult clients had income from employment at the end of the fiscal year.

  • History:
  • Bethany Services, which owns and operates the Bakersfield Homeless Center (BHC), was founded as a soup kitchen in 1972, and gained nonprofit status in 1986. Five years later, in 1991, Bethany Services began doing business as the Bakersfield Homeless Center, which was incorporated as a full-service emergency homeless shelter.

    Since then, BHC has become the largest provider of homeless services to families with children and single adults in Kern County’s 8,200 square miles. Out of its 180 maximum shelter beds, 122 (68%) are designated for families with children; 44 (24%) are for single women; and 14 (8%) for single men. The family dormitory is made up of semi-private units that sleep 6-8 persons each, making it possible for parents to be housed together with their children.
