  • Mission:
  • Creating excellent mobility choices and vibrant, healthy neighborhoods.

  • Overview:
  • Circulate San Diego is a regional grassroots organization formed through the merger of Move San Diego and WalkSanDiego, San Diego County's leading organizations dedicated to advancing mobility and making the region a better place to live, work, learn, and play. Our multimodal work creates the foundation for more sustainable community growth by creating great mobility choices, more walkable and bikeable neighborhoods, and land use.

Circulate San Diego envisions the San Diego region as a compilation of unique, complete, and interconnected neighborhoods in which walking, bicycling, and taking transit are viable alternatives to driving for meeting daily needs and living a healthy lifestyle. Our three organizational goals are to 1) Champion human-scale land use, transportation, and placemaking strategies in the San Diego region, 2) Connect neighborhoods and people with a multimodal transportation network that is appealing, convenient, and safe, and 3) Increase funding and policies that support active transportation and healthy, sustainable neighborhoods.

Circulate San Diego serves communities throughout the County. We conduct education, training, outreach, and advocacy programs and working closely with traffic engineers, city planners, elected officials, and concerned citizens. We also work to prioritize, fund, and implement better transportation choices, and have become a trusted public voice for sustainable transportation.

  • History:
  • Circulate San Diego is a result of the 2014 merger of nonprofits WalkSanDiego and Move San Diego. While working in the same neighborhoods toward similar goals, the organizations saw an opportunity to better serve the San Diego region by coming together to advocate for more transportation choices in our communities.

WalkSanDiego was founded in 1998 by volunteers with professional backgrounds in land use, air quality, transportation, and development issues who shared a passion for creating neighborhoods that people want to explore and get around on foot. Move San Diego was formed in 2004 by citizens, environmentalists, bicyclists, pedestrians and transportation experts to build broad support for sustainable transportation systems and land use policies. Together, Circulate San Diego works with local governments, SANDAG, the private sector, and citizens on the health, environmental, and economic benefits of driving less.

As a merged organization, Circulate San Diego has collectively over 20 years in the multimodal, smart growth and clean transportation arena with environmental and quality of life benefits being the primary goals of the organization. In the next 35 years, the San Diego population will grow by 1 million. Our work helps to reduce carbon emissions from transportation, reduce impacts from climate change, reduce sprawl, and conserve natural resources while protecting environmental quality.
