General

  • Mission:
  • The mission of Community Family Guidance Center is to support children, families, and individuals to heal, thrive, and achieve their potential. Our goals are to alleviate the trauma of child abuse and mental illness and to foster the development of healthy family relationships.

  • Overview:
  • Community Family Guidance Center, founded in 1976, is a $5.6 million dollar organization. Our Core Programs and Strengthening Families Initiatives are provided in partnership with Los Angeles County Department of Mental Health, which together serve close to 4,600 clients yearly. These programs are as follows: 1) Child Abuse Prevention and Treatment Services; 2) Early Childhood Services; 3) Early Intervention and Prevention Services; 4) School-based Mental Health Services; 5) Clinical Services for Seriously Emotionally Disturbed Children/Youth; 6) Psychiatric Medication Management; 7) Family Preservation Services; 8) Parent/Caregiver Services; and 9) USC School of Social Work Teaching Institute Partnership. In addition, we provide five evidence-based practices within our core programming, as follows: 1) Trauma-focused Cognitive Behavioral Therapy; 2) Strengthening Families Groups; 3) Reflective Parenting Program; 4) Parent Child Interactive Therapy; and 5) Managing and Adapting Practices. Our programs are informed by our new Strengthening Families Treatment Philosophy and moves us beyond a limiting medical model of care and towards a strength-base “whole family” approach to care. The Strengthening Families Framework is research based, and it was created by Center for Social Policy and Doris Duke Charitable Foundation in 2002. Lastly, we serve clients at two primary sites, 42 schools, and in clients’ homes throughout Southeast Los Angeles County, portions of Long Beach, and other surrounding cities.

  • History:
  • For thirty-seven years, Community Family Guidance Center has transformed the lives of thousands of children and families from vulnerable, disenfranchised communities residing in Southeast Los Angeles County. In May 1974, we were founded as a satellite office of the Intercommunity Child Guidance Center of Whittier. Our purpose was to meet an increased need for culturally, linguistically appropriate outpatient mental health services for children of Hawaiian Gardens. In 1976, after much growth, in both programming and geographic scope, the Intercommunity Child Guidance Center Clinic convened its own Board of Directors and established its autonomy. And thus, Community Family Guidance Center began.
