General

  • Mission:
  • Citizens for Dixie’s Future (CDF) is a grassroots coalition of local citizens committed to protecting the natural resources and quality of life in Washington County for the benefit of present and future generations.

  • Overview:
  • Washington County, Utah is one of the fastest growing “new” urban areas in the nation. Community growth in this region has steadily increased urban pressures on land, air and water in the area. Citizens for Dixie’s Future (CDF) works to educate citizens and involve them in the planning for future use of our resources.

    We seek to:
    • Promote a vision of balanced growth that prioritizes conservation stewardship of land, air and water resources to benefit local communities.
    • Support smart growth planning that results in quality economic development and fiscal responsibility while minimizing tax impacts and sprawl.
    • Create a stronger, more effective local voice to support conservation-oriented public and private land-use planning to protect watershed, recreation, wildlife and scenic open space values.
    • Educate citizens about crucial growth proposals and inform citizens of opportunities to help shape a better future to benefit local communities

  • History:
  • Citizens for Dixie’s Future (CDF) has been the primary local voice for conservation in Washington County, Utah since 2006. Citizens for Dixie’s Future (CDF) was founded in response to the Washington County Growth and Conservation Act (Act), which would have sold 25,000 acres of federal land for private development. Through the organization’s efforts to educate the community on the impact of the land sale, inspired citizens became actively involved and changed the Act. The end result, the Omnibus Public Land Management Act of 2009, designated 150,000+ acres of land in Washington County into the National Conservation Lands system. We produced hundreds of local comments by engaging recreationists, hunters, horsemen, and citizens concerned with the quality of life provided by protecting our public lands. The success and importance of our organizing efforts was reflected in the landmark collaborative nature of this designation.

CDF has continued to engage the public on lands issues as BLM moves through the Resource Management planning process for these newly designated lands. Our success mobilizing local support for conservation has evolved into creation of SUNCLF (Southwest Utah National Conservation Lands Friends), a “friends” group program for the Conservation Lands in and around St George, UT. The SUNCLF program works to unite individuals from a broad and diverse base that care for and value our local National Conservation Areas through volunteer projects & community education.
