  • Mission:
  • The mission of College Horizons is to encourage and facilitate the higher education of Native American young people.

  • History:
  • College Horizons was founded in 1998 by Dr. Whitney Laughlin at the Native American Preparatory School (where she was then college counselor and director of admission) in partnership with Norbert Hill and the American Indian Science and Engineering Society (AISES). The first program had 48 students. In 2001, due to changes in the administration at NAPS and the increased size of the program, College Horizons was held at two college campuses – St. John’s and Washington University. Since that time, Whitman, Dartmouth, Harvard, Carleton, Oberlin, and Westmont Colleges, University of Puget Sound, Rice and Stanford Universities have hosted us. In 2004 we were a Daniels Fund site as well. Because of a rapidly growing applicant pool, we are now at 180 students – 90 per site – and we fill the program earlier each year. In 2007, our tenth anniversary year, we were at Stanford and Harvard with a record 200 students. In 2008 we will be at Duke and Lawrence Universities.

College Horizons alumni requested a pre-graduate program based on the CH model. Graduate Horizons was first held in 2004 at Washington University with 60 students. In 2006, our third year, we had 75 students at Yale University. In 2007 we were at University of Washington – Seattle and in 2008 will be hosted by the University of Arizona, with room for as many as 90 students.
