General

  • Mission:
  • The Alcove's Mission is to provide a safe place where children and their families, who are grieving a death, can receive comfort and support through the healing process.
Research has shown that one in 20 children will lose a parent before reaching adulthood, and that there is a strong correlation between early loss and later depression and school failure.
The Alcove's purpose is to address the needs of grieving children to alleviate their immediate suffering, and prevent future emotional, mental and social problems.
The Alcove’s target population is children ages 3-18 who have experienced the death of a loved one, and their caregivers. Our Northfield center is within easy driving distance to Atlantic, Cape May, Cumberland, Ocean, Burlington, Gloucester and Camden counties in southern New Jersey.
The Alcove’s services include activity-based, peer support groups led by trained volunteers in our Northfield center, and school-based groups led by a Master’s level social worker in distressed communities in our region.

  • History:
  • The Alcove was the first grief center for children in New Jersey. It remains the only children’s grief center in the southern half of the state. Founders Patricia Smith and Mindy Shemtov, both Master’s level social workers, realized children were often left alone to process grief, as the adults in their lives tried to “protect” them by not talking about the death, and as adults grappled with their own overwhelming feelings of loss.
In 2001, Mindy, Pat and a small board of directors established The Alcove as a 501 (c) 3 charity. It started out as a group for six children run from a church basement, and now serves more than 250 children and family members a year in its center, and another 50 children in its school outreach program. Since its inception, The Alcove has provided grief support to more than 1,000 people.
In 2004 The Alcove moved into its own center, and in 2007 it expanded the center from 2,000 square feet to 3,000 square feet, and hired four part-time workers to take it into the future as one of its co-founders, therapist Patricia Smith, MSS LCSW, retired.
The Alcove increased its number of board members to 24 in 2007.
