  • Mission:
  • Catawba Lands Conservancy (CLC) is a non-profit, community based land trust that permanently preserves and manages land for public benefit in the Southern Piedmont of North Carolina. With a mission of saving land and connecting lives to nature, CLC focuses its conservation and stewardship efforts on safeguarding the region’s natural resources, local farmland, unique ecosystems, riparian buffers that filter the region’s drinking water, threatened and endangered species, and public trails that make nature accessible to an increasing urban population. Conservation is the active effort to ensure and preserve our region's natural landscape today and for future generations.

  • Overview:
  • CLC is a nationally accredited land trust by the Land Trust Accreditation Commission which ensures that land trusts ethically and effectively use public and private funding to save land. CLC works with willing landowners to protect the Southern Piedmont's natural spaces through land donations, bargain sales or conservation easements. Once a property is permanently protected, CLC is also responsible for stewarding the land and ensuring each property’s special natural features remain intact in perpetuity.

The Charlotte metro area has experienced huge growth and development over the past 15 years with a 32% increase in population since 2000. With such exponential growth, the Charlotte metro area was ranked as the fifteenth fastest growing metropolitan area from 2000 to 2010. While CLC believes in the benefits of growth and development for our region, it also believes in a balanced approach called smart growth. As the local leader of conservation, CLC works to protect the natural treasures that define our region and to enhance the quality of life for everyone. With smart growth, our region can remain economically competitive and environmentally sustainable.

Currently, CLC permanently preserves 170 properties, totaling nearly 15,000 acres of land for public benefit. In 2013, CLC had a record year protecting more than 1,900 acres of land among 14 different properties. CLC is also the lead agency for the Carolina Thread Trail (the Thread Trail). The Thread Trail is a 15-county, two-state initiative designed to inspire and facilitate the creation and development of a regional network of trails, blueways and conservation corridors that will link more than 2.3 million citizens. Today, 223 miles of the Thread Trail are open to the public.

  • History:
  • Catawba Lands Conservancy started with an effort led by a small coalition, Save Mountain Island Lake for Everyone, which worked to protect the water quality of Mountain Island Lake - a major source of drinking water for the City of Charlotte. Through the work of the coalition, it was apparent that a larger and broader effort was needed to protect the Catawba River Basin. As a natural resource that provides both drinking water and recreational opportunities in North Carolina and South Carolina, it was critical to take action to protect this invaluable resource. CLC was thus incorporated in 1991 and currently serves six counties of North Carolina: Catawba, Gaston, Iredell, Lincoln, Mecklenburg and Union.
