General

  • Mission:
  • Ark’s mission is to provide education for youth and adults to enhance emotional intelligence which leads them to heal the past, be happy in the present and create a successful future. For its work in this area over the last several years, Ark has received numerous awards, more recently the “Character and Ethics Community Award” from the Glendale Character and Ethics Project for 2013.

  • Overview:
  • This proposal is for the Ark Family Center's unique emotional intelligence course for youth education success. This workshop-type course fits your mission educational support area and geographic requirements. The student target population is underserved youth, ages 14-18 from various public schools throughout the county. There are a number of worthy classroom sites, previously used, in the greater Los Angeles county area including the central one in Glendale. Overall, Ark has seven life improvement seminar programs, life coaching and mentoring serving over 200 people per year.

The core workshop called Create Freedom and Awareness (CFA) is an eight week workshop designed to increase the emotional intelligence of participants. Emotional intelligence is defined as the ability or capacity to perceive, assess and manage the emotions of one’s self and of others. The CFA workshop, therefore, motivates and inspires youth who are uncertain about their future goals and, in turn, propels them to take responsibility for creating a meaningful path while in high school. The eight-week course fosters skill development, strategies and attitudes that students need to continue to excel in school and to be prepared for continuing their education at a college or university and later the fast-paced world of work. The course further provides experiences for participants to develop leadership, teamwork, citizenship and character development. As a result of actively participating in the program, our youth learn to make better choices about school, studying and how they spend their time. This translates to better grades for many of them and increased high school graduation rates.
