  • Mission:
  • Access Living's mission is to foster the dignity, pride, and self-esteem of people with disabilities and enhance the options available to them so they may choose and maintain individualized and satisfying lifestyles.

  • Overview:
  • Established in 1980, our organization is a change agent committed to fostering an inclusive society that enables Chicagoans with disabilities to live fully-engaged and self-directed lives. To achieve our goals, we offer: (1) peer oriented independent living services, (2) enforcement of civil rights on behalf of individuals with disabilities, and (3) popular education and advocacy efforts. As the only federally funded Center for Independent Living in Chicago, we have increased the independence of over 50,000 individuals with disabilities since our founding and annually serve approximately 3,000 individuals. We are a cross-disability organization governed and staffed by a majority of people with disabilities. This means that we bring a unique perspective and level of experience to our consumers. Furthermore, the variety of services we provide is unparalleled; with a single phone call or visit to our universally accessible building, our consumers can, among other things, receive legal advice, make connections with disability resources in their community, join a peer support group, or get connected with a personal attendant to help them live independently. Additionally, we work to make education, public transportation, and communication more accessible, in addition to enforcing the Americans with Disabilities Act and the Fair Housing Amendments Act, thereby improving the lives and increasing the independence of countless other people with disabilities.

  • History:
  • We have developed a reputation for being a pioneer in the disability community. Some of the significant milestones in our history include: playing a key role in the passage of the Americans with Disabilities Act and the Fair Housing Amendments Act, establishing the first fair housing program in the country, partnering with the City of Chicago to expand the accessibility guidelines in the Chicago Building Code, participating in a $15 million settlement aimed at improving the accessibility of Chicago public transit, establishing our headquarters in a universally designed and green building, and transitioning more than 250 of our consumers from nursing homes into the community.
