General

  • Mission:
  • Big Run Wolf Ranch is a non profit, federally licensed, educational organization which specializes in education and conservation of North American wildlife.

  • History:
  • Big Run Wolf Ranch has two primary purposes. First we provide and care for underprivileged wildlife that came to our ranch as a result of abandonment, illegal ownership, and injury or to avoid euthanasia. Second, we offer educational programs informing children and adults about the importance of wildlife conservation, ecological conservation and endangered species protection.

In 1986, Mr. John Basile purchased secluded farm property in Lockport, Illinois, now known as Big Run Wolf Ranch. Our first unwanted wolf hybrid pup came to the ranch in 1987. That same year, Mr. Basile applied for and received a U.S.D.A Federal License. Shortly thereafter, Big Run Wolf Ranch acquired a female grey wolf pup, saving her from being euthanized. In 1989, Big Run Wolf Ranch adopted two more adult wolves as rescues from a licensed facility that was struggling financially. Over the next few years Big Run Wolf Ranch acquired more wayward wildlife including a North American black bear cub. Today, we have several species of wolves including British Columbian wolves, North American grey timber wolves and Arctic wolves. In addition to the wolves and black bear, Big Run Wolf Ranch also has other wildlife including a cougar, a coyote, a lynx and skunks.

In 1992, Mr. Basile began visiting schools and giving wildlife education presentations. Word soon spread and Mr. Basile was traveling all over the greater Chicago area to schools, libraries and scout groups. In 1995, Big Run Wolf Ranch incorporated and in 2002 Big Run Wolf Ranch became a 501 (c) (3) non profit organization.

Big Run Wolf Ranch offers wildlife education programs at schools, libraries, nature centers, park districts and museums. We travel all over the Chicago area and Northwest Indiana with our wildlife for interactive presentations. Big Run Wolf Ranch also hosts field trips, open house events and birthday parties at our location. Big Run Wolf Ranch offers a safe viewing environment of the wildlife, featuring one on one contact with these unique creatures.

Today, Big Run Wolf Ranch presents their wildlife education programs to over 20,000 youth and adults each year in the Chicago area and Northwest Indiana.
