  • Mission:
  • To promote the implementation of processes directed toward the proper use of natural resources and truly sustainable development in the area of Costa Rica and Panama influenced by the Talamanca Cordillera. These processes integrate right livelihood, biodiversity conservation, environmental health and the roles of strong, committed local organizations.

  • Overview:
  • ANAI, Inc. is the U.S. sister organization of Asociacion ANAI, an award-winning Costa Rican-based NGO that has a remarkable 30+ year history of helping to protect one of the world’s most important areas of biodiversity while shaping and catalyzing one of the tropical world’s most successful models for helping rural communities become more economically self-reliant through environmentally friendly activities. In 2002, ANAI and its grassroots partners from the Talamanca region of Costa Rica were awarded the first United Nations Equator Initiative Prize for “extraordinary accomplishment in reducing poverty in the tropics through the conservation and sustainable use of biodiversity in a World Heritage Site.” Strongly overlapping program areas include organic agroforestry, processing and marketing services for small farmers, community-based ecotourism, environmental education, co-management of protected areas, aquatic and marine systems research and conservation, and leadership training.

“Because of ANAI’s efforts, Talamanca is now a region where rural economic development goes hand in hand with the conservation of biodiversity and natural resources.” - Thomas J. Dodd, former U.S. Ambassador to Costa Rica

  • History:
  • Asociacion ANAI was founded in 1978 as a Costa Rican nonprofit. This was followed in 1987 by the creation of ANAI, Inc. a U.S. 501(c)3 nonprofit, with a part-time staff of one, which exists to further the purposes of Asociacion ANAI as a fiscal agent and through activities such as publicity generation, volunteer recruitment and purchasing. Activities of Asociacion ANAI are suggested by the Overview above.

Our Stream Biomonitoring Program, created in 2000, is our newest program and works to train and involve residents of the watersheds draining the La Amistad World Heritage Site (Costa Rica and Panama) in monitoirng the health of their rivers and using this information to protect biodiversity and their environment in general, in coordination with other programs of ANAI and other local organizations. Since 2000, we have trained a cadre of about 20 indigenous parataxonomists, technicians and environmental educators. Together with them, we have developed what is probably the largest watershed-based aquatic biodiversity database in the world. This information is used both to educate the local public (elementary school to adult) develop solutions to environmental problems of local origin, and to inform and facilitate responses to external threats such as proposals for hydro dams and open pit metal mines.
