  • Mission:
  • Canines for Service is dedicated to empowering people with disabilities to achieve greater independence and enhanced quality of life through the services of specially trained service dogs.

  • Overview:
  • The highly skilled service dogs change a person’s life by providing for an unmet health care need. Service dogs trained through Canines for Service are able to perform tasks for their partner such as: retrieving dropped/distant objects, pulling wheelchairs, opening doors, carrying items, rising to high counters (i.e. banks, hotels), physically supporting for mobility, transfers to/from wheelchairs, physical assistance to recover from a fall, dressing or undressing, assisting with household tasks such as bed making and laundry, and assisting an individual after a seizure. The goal is to help the person living with a disability achieve more independence with the service dog and increase the persons’ quality of life through the special human-animal bond that forms.

The service dog training takes up to 3 years and the dogs know approximately 90 tasks when fully trained. Canines for Service continually assesses the health and temperament of the service dog in training and a placement readiness assessment is completed on each dog prior to matching the dog with a client. Service dogs are placed with an approved applicant at no cost to the applicant. Service dogs are valued at $40,000 to $50,000. Canines for Service has provided 72 service dogs to people with disabilities including 34 Veterans.

Canines for Service an accredited Assistance Dogs International member organization; only one of 57 in United States. The demand for quality trained service dogs is high with the average wait time for a service dog ranging from two to five years. Less than 100 people with disabilities are matched with a skilled service dog each year. The need to increase the number of qualified, skilled trainers and the number for appropriate service dogs made available each year is great. Canines for Service is poised and ready to meet the need to educate and train skilled trainers for this industry.

  • History:
  • Canines for Service Inc., formerly known as Carolina Canines for Service Inc., was established December 1, 1996 in Wilmington, North Carolina by co-founder Rick Hairston. His experience in raising and training service dogs began with several years of volunteer service for an internationally known service dog organization in St. Louis, Missouri. Upon moving to Wilmington, he found there were no service dog organizations in southeastern North Carolina. Knowing the great need people with physical disabilities have for quality trained service dogs, Canines for Service was born out of Rick’s belief that he was called to serve people in need.
