  • Mission:
  • Catholic Charities Diocese of Charlotte is a non-profit social service agency. Our mission statement is, "We are a Christian ministry of charity, service and justice dedicated to providing help to those in need, hope to those in despair, and inspiration for others to follow." We focus our efforts to fulfill this mission on three key areas--strengthening families, building communities, and reducing poverty. We serve all people regardless of their age, race, ethnicity, religious affiliation, or economic /social background.

  • Overview:
  • The Piedmont Triad Regional Office of Catholic Charities Diocese of Charlotte (CCDOC) is located about 80 miles outside of Charlotte NC. The regional office seeks to provide a safety net for teen and young adults who are experiencing crisis, coping with trauma, or handling unexpected parenthood while living in poverty. CCDOC will do so by providing case management, counseling, and direct financial assistance for targeted youth and their families. Twenty-five percent of children in NC are living in poverty. These children and youth have a higher risk of drug involvement, incarceration, gang involvement, and school drop out because of their poverty. Layering the impact of crisis, trauma or parenthood, skyrockets the risk factors for these children of promise.
CCDOC is well positioned in the Piedmont Triad community to “catch” youth who are not likely to find support at school, community recreation centers, and other organized community helpers. Collaborations with the school social workers and attendance officers, the juvenile court system including lawyers and police, as well as a local “street school” often place youth in trouble at our doorstep. CCDOC seeks funding to reach out to these young people with services that seek to build trust and to provide services that will significantly decrease the risk factors of trauma, crisis, and unexpected parenthood. Babies born to these young parents will benefit as well from removed or reduced risk factors.

  • History:
  • The Bureau of Catholic Charities was founded in 1948 to serve the poor and vulnerable across North Carolina. In 1949, a Catholic Charities branch office was opened in Charlotte. The agency initially provided pregnancy support, maternity care, foster care, and adoption services statewide.
In 1973, the charitable outreach of the Catholic Church in the western half of North Carolina incorporated under the name of Catholic Social Services of the Diocese of Charlotte, North Carolina, Inc., and began offering a wider range of services.
Catholic Charities Diocese of Charlotte, as it is now known, is accredited by the Council on Accreditation (COA), a national accrediting body for human service agencies. With five office locations, the agency serves more than 18,000 people per year in 46 counties. Services at our Winston-Salem regional office include food and clothing distribution; individual, marriage, and family counseling; support for pregnant teens and teens in crisis; and disaster relief.
